“Aviation is a growth industry and essential for global mobility. However, its climate impact is extremely difficult to mitigate. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) play the major role in leading global aviation to a CO2-neutral future towards the net zero goal. To get this on track it is evermore important all stakeholders work together: producers and suppliers, airlines as well as aircraft manufacturers, supported by a reliable industry-friendly regulatory framework. At ILA, aireg will showcase #SAF is at the top of the agenda.” Siegfried Knecht, aireg, Chairman of the Board Meet us at our booth no. 111 (hall 2) during #ILA2024 in Berlin to speak to representatives from aireg - Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. or one of the participating members: HCS Group CAPHENIA DHL HH2E Horváth bp EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft mbH en2x – Wirtschaftsverband Fuels und Energie e.V. On 22 and 23 May, #PtX Hub was invited to participate in the big @Sustainable Aviation Futures Congress 2024 #SAFEU, in Amsterdam. On the panel “PtL and eFuels feedstock and technology focus: Evaluating production pathways - Methanol to jet, DAC, FT and more…”, addressing diverse #SAF production pathways, Ruth Barbosa brought in the perspective of international cooperation and skills development. Key points Ruth Barbosa covered: ➡ When evaluating and testing different pathways to decarbonise aviation fuels, it is compulsory to involve emerging economies from the outset, leveraging their local potentials. The transformation of the aviation sector opens significant opportunities for local development. ➡ Capacity development at various levels is crucial, targeting decision-makers and multipliers who can disseminate the topic of SAF in academia and TVET worldwide. Other key take aways from the numerous sessions of the event: ➡ Creating favourable conditions for Financial Investment Decisions (FID) remains the key challenge for the ramp-up of SAF projects. ➡Debates on the most effective policy measures continue: subsidies, mandates, or penalties? ➡Avoidance of contrails and other non-CO2 effects will significantly help clean aviation, and research is progressing well in this area! Thanks to Sustainable Aviation Futures for the invite and interesting discussions in the community. #defossilisation

Just arrived in Berlin. BY TRAIN - traveling sustainably for various reasons including that my journey originated in Bamberg - a mere three hours to Berlin. That is if my train had not been cancelled due to severe weather events in southern Bavaria which caused disruption of services. Southern Germany has seen massive flooding in recent days and as per climatologists sever weather events are likely to become the new normal even in Europe. NOW IS THE TIME! Each and every industry is held to take action, is held to i.a. reduce their CO2 footprint. 🛫 Aviation HAS multiple answers to decarbonization - SCALING OF SAF PRODUCTION WILL BE THE MOST CRUCIAL to deliver progress on reducing the industry's CO2/non-CO2 emissions. 🗣 Am honored and excited to moderate the panel on "SAF TAKEOFF: ENSURING FINANCING AND SCALING PRODUCTION" featuring top experts Julie Kitcher (Airbus), Christian Ehler (MdEP), Mark Misselhorn (CAPHENIA), Michael Haid (EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft mbH, Uwe Gaudig (Griesemann Gruppe) and Thorsten Herdan (HIF Global). 🤝 Each and everyone of my fellow panelists is committed to advance the production of SAF - we now need to create a fertile environment to enable timely implementation. 💡 To quote my IMPACT on sustainable aviation colleague Tom Conlon (professor at University College Dublin), who co-leads our science workstream: We need short-term investment for long-term disruption. Well said! Eurocontrol white paper emphasizes why industry hopes are pinned on alternative fuels: "we are, unfortunately, a long way from being able to use technologies such as batteries, fuel cells, hydrogen, methane, ammonia before several decades for any large-size aeroplane" "Just under 10% of flights from the EU27+UK area are longhaul (i.e. flying more than 3,000 km), but these account for over 50% of all aviation CO2 emissions. Game-changing technologies such as batteries, fuel cells, hydrogen, methane, ammonia or solar energy? This paper takes a hypothetical scenario – a large widebody flying from Paris to Singapore – and assesses how much time, energy and cost it would take to perform that flight, and what that would entail in technical terms, for each new technology. The answer in each case is that we are, unfortunately, a long way from being able to use any of these technologies before several decades for any large-size aeroplane."
