I don’t usually celebrate personal achievements, but reaching 5 years at AWS has given me a moment to reflect on my journey. Seeing my new badge made me appreciate the experiences and growth I've gained. I'm grateful for the lessons learned and the professional I've become. None of this would have been possible without the support, leadership, and guidance from my leaders, mentors, and peers. Here are a few valuable lessons I've learned along the way that I'd like to share: 1) Learn & Be Curious: There's no age or level at which learning should stop. Constant curiosity about "What's next?" will help you stay relevant in the industry. 2) Own Your Personal Career: Take the steering wheel and create your own path. While you'll have supporters and guides, the drive must come from within: Stay Hungry! 3) The Importance of Mentors: Mentors have been instrumental in my growth. Connecting with them has allowed me to seek guidance from experienced leaders. 4) Embrace New Challenges: Be confident in your strengths and open-minded. Successful people always find a path to success. Start small, demonstrate impact, and create replicable mechanisms. 5) Find Your Inner Balance: To perform at your best, balance is key. Reflecting on my 5 years at Amazon, I am grateful for the opportunities and trust I've been given. Transitioning roles, tackling large-scale and complex projects, and leading impactful teams have significantly influenced my personal and professional growth. Today marks my two-year work anniversary at AWS, and as I pause to reflect, I can't help but be grateful for the invaluable lessons over the last two years as a whole but also the amazing people who have shared their insights and lessons. Many of our program beneficiaries have inquired about my journey at AWS, and I'd love to share the five guiding principles that have profoundly impacted my perspective and growth: 1️⃣ Stay true to yourself - Remember that you are your own benchmark. By staying authentic, you're setting a unique bar that you will continue to surpass. 2️⃣ Work in a team & develop the best - Whether you are an Individual Contributor or in a Team, collaboration amplifies potential. Nurturing and leaning into the strengths of a collective team fosters unmatched results. 3️⃣ Communicate, communicate, communicate - The bridge to successful outcomes is clear communication. Whether it's to express, clarify, or simply update, always keep the lines open. 4️⃣ Take risks - Venturing outside of your comfort zone is where genuine growth sprouts. While it may seem daunting, it's these leaps that lead to profound discoveries. 5️⃣ Keep your feet grounded - As we ascend in our journeys, let's not forget the foundational values and the onus to make our world a tad better than we found it. Satya, an Indian-American business executive, started his career at Sun Microsystems before joining Microsoft in 1992. He played a pivotal role in Microsoft's shift to cloud computing, making it one of the largest cloud infrastructures globally. And this transformation is huge! His leadership saw Microsoft's revenue from Cloud Services grow from $16.6 billion to $20.3 billion in 2013. Notably, under Satya's guidance, Microsoft stock increased nearly tenfold by November 2023, ending a 14-year period of near-zero growth. Satya's approach to leadership is commendable. He introduced a cultural shift at Microsoft, focusing on empathy, collaboration, and a 'growth mindset’ which makes him an excellent leader. Furthermore, Satya Nadella has been at the forefront of strategic acquisitions, including LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in 2016 and GitHub for US$7.5 billion in 2018. Satya's leadership style and vision have not only revitalized Microsoft but have set new standards for corporate culture, emphasizing continual learning and growth. After 4 years, and 8 months of Day 1s at AWS I've decided to accept a position that will challenge me and allow me to serve students in my city through program management and operational excellence. When I joined AWS as an educator, I was intentional about what I wanted to gain and how I intended to contribute. Careers are yours to own. Your path should align to Your values and Your goals. Here are some lessons I'm taking into my next chapter that I've learned on my wild, exciting, career journey thus far: 1. Be clear about what you Enjoy, are skilled at, and areas you want to develop. This will serve you well when vetting roles and interviewing. Thanks for teaching me this Jacqueline Kennedy, Ed.D. 2. Set clear goals and milestones for your personal and career plans. I use FutureMe to send 6 month and 12 month letters to myself to celebrate milestones I plan to accomplish within that time frame. FutureMe 3. Choose a manager that you admire. Managers are so important to your success. Ask questions to understand who they are at work and if they make time for play. Time flies! At the beginning of 2023, I decided it was time to look for a new challenge, a new job. Many friends and colleagues have asked me why I decided to take this step after 18 years at my previous company. The answer is quite simple: I always pushed the boundaries in my previous roles, and have done so for a long time, including digital solutions. So I asked myself, where could I find a place where I could push harder, invent and help more companies on their digital journey? The answer was Amazon Web Services (AWS), a company I've worked with as a customer for a long time. Exactly one year ago, I joined AWS as an Enterprise Technologist. And now I'm celebrating my first anniversary! Have my decision and expectations been met? Short answer - yes! 😃 Working at Amazon Web Services (AWS), a company with such a high density of talented people, is a pool of inspiration and learning. Putting the customer at the center of every discussion and decision is so refreshing and ensures that you make a difference. Challenging the status quo daily and having the opportunity to invent and simplify. For those who want to know more about the peculiar Amazon culture, look at the Leadership Principles. These principles are not just polished sentences, they are lived every day and are the foundation of Amazon. I've learned how powerful they are in driving innovation and delivering results.
