5.2 million jobs. $28 billion of exports. $229 billion in GDP impact. $490 billion in economic activity. That was the global impact of Shopify entrepreneurs in 2022. There’s never been any kind of public, global database specifically for measuring entrepreneurship impact — until now. Today we’re launching the Shopify Entrepreneurship Index in beta. It’s a 10,000 ft view of how entrepreneurs impact the world economy, across 40 countries and every U.S. state. Here are just a few ways independent businesses are changing the face of commerce. In 2022, entrepreneurs in Shopify’s ecosystem: 1️⃣ Supported 5.2 million jobs worldwide. That’s equivalent to the entire population of New Zealand 🇳🇿 2️⃣ Generated $28 billion of exports, enough to buy six NFL teams 🏈 3️⃣ Created $229 billion in GDP impact. That’s more than the market capitalization of the entire McDonald’s Corporation 🍟 4️⃣ Contributed $490 billion in economic activity. That’s an enormous value added to the global economy because of the sales our merchants make. Incredible 💪 Shopify powers millions of businesses all over the world, which makes us one of the few organizations with the data and network to build such a comprehensive database. I’m in awe of our merchants every day, but these numbers really put it into perspective: entrepreneurship is changing the world. It’s remarkable to see, and I’m so proud. I am always impressed with the Shopify reporting, who doesn't love data? And the new benchmarking is epic. This proves that many customers are rooting for the underdog!

Shopify just made it easy. If you have a great brand idea Shopify empowers the entrepreneur to give it a go. So many of our small and mid-size customers, and nowadays even large customers, are using Shopify to get their message out and drive sales, we are happy to be working with them. Interestingly though, while many see this as the doom of brick and mortar, we have seen our clients increasingly augment their online presence with physical stores or pop-ups to get closer to their customers. #entrepreneur #retail

1yDo these figures factor in the ecosystem? The amount of jobs, teams, companies that thrive in the ecosystem created by Shopify? I imagine that would add considerably to this, if not already factored in. It is so hard to grasp the impact Shopify has both through direct service provision, and indirect ecosystem services, to overall economic activity! 👏
