What’s a carbon footprint? 🤔 #netzerocarbon It’s an individual or organization’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. And without a reliable, accurate representation of a company’s carbon footprint, it’s hard to know how to chart the path to net zero. But some organizations aren’t tracking their carbon footprint at all. Other organizations are trying to work with environmental data in siloed systems or in spreadsheets. Even if an organization tracks this data, it can take 6 to 8 months to collect data from the previous fiscal year. Time spent looking in the rearview mirror is time you can’t take action in the present. Businesses also need to build trust and transparency with stakeholders and show that they are making progress to net zero. They do that by providing accurate reports on their progress and sharing their plans for a more sustainable future. Over the coming years I'm expecting to see major brands pushing back their net-zero target dates... You might expect me to say that this is a bad thing, but I don't think it always is. For many firms this is because they are now deep in the weeds of trying to create emissions baselines and only now realising how complicated it is and how poor their underlying data was. Personally I would much rather brands were more open and honest, owning the scale of their emissions and doing what they can to be transparent with their figures and have a plan in place to reduce their emissions as far as practically possible. Focusing on an arbitrary deadline that was created when you lacked the knowledge isn't a viable way forward, meaning that having a realistic target based on actual provable reductions is far more valuable. The obsession with "Net zero" is what's led to firms like Salesforce reinventing it to suit their marketing narrative and drive for revenue growth. This doesn't help anyone. This article from Intel is a good example showing the complexity of the challenge at hand. Whilst they haven't shifted their date, they are painfully aware of how complicated their supply chain is alongside the need to trust the data they are provided. https://lnkd.in/e4yStGtF #greenops #scope3 #netzero
