For decades, I have used a professional email that is not linked to my current employer (it's linked to my membership in a professional association - ACM, Association for Computing Machinery). I have run into the requirement Tara discusses below and also chose to not sign up. I am a professional in my own right outside of whatever employer I am currently working for. If I am interested in a community, information, collaboration, or resources I want to access it separately from my work persona. I don't necessarily want my work email cluttered or have to receive it at work, then send it home to myself so I can read it in my off-hours. Nor do I want to have to track all such subscriptions and reapply every time I change jobs. #marketingrestrictions #professional #lifetimelearning
A cautionary tale of exclusion: When I sign up for communities and resources for *me* and not my employer, I use my Gmail account. It goes with me everywhere. 😢 Unfortunately, I'm not always allowed to use this account. When I run into communities and events that refuse to let me sign up with my Gmail account and instead specify the need for a "work" email, it's like they are saying that I'm not worth it as a person unless I'm bringing my employer along for the ride. I immediately second-guess your product or event and wonder if you're worth it too. It's pay-to-play. Moral of the story - People use personal accounts for lots of reasons. If you're excluding those accounts, you're excluding those people. WHO OWNS THE WIFI SIGNAL ? This is a very interesting exchange between two neighbors. One who was paying for wifi and the other who was using his signal unbeknownst to him. When he password his wifi at the suggestion of the broadband company to cure the slow speed he was inquiring about, his neighbor came to his door to complain to him. There was a point where I actually was seeing the logic of the neighborhood until I understood it was slowing his wifi down. In any rate it's a very interesting exchange. So. Connection…uh connects. Last week, I talked about the importance of “Connection” in our lives. We know it’s true and important and all that…but we struggle with connecting effectively with people. And the #1 culprit in that? We make everything about us. “I just wanna say…” and “I think…” and “I feel…” These days, firehosing your opinion is all the rage. We even have dedicated platforms where we stand on our soapbox and tell the world what we’re thinking. Yes. I see the irony. Over the past year, I’ve read 20 or so books on relationships and connection (check out “Us” by Terrance Real). Nearly all of them say some version of the same message, a message that will help you connect better at work and at home. “Replace being right with being connected.” Holy crumb, we lovelovelove being right. There is nothing like the rush of putting that Facebook troll In. Their. Place. Or winning that argument with our spouse. Or have a rejected idea take flight. But. Being “right” doesn’t help our friendships, colleagueships or relationships. Correcting someone on their grammar (guilty!) doesn’t make the other side think, “Oh wow. I’m so glad I have that fact. My life is immeasurably better.” It makes them think, “You’re a jerk. You know full well what I mean.” Want to make your day better? Let go of being right and comparison and judgment. But when does your slow response seem like "ghosting" to the other person?
