New blog post (this one has been a long time coming)!   It’s an interview with Candace Epps-Robertson -- “On Seasons of Life, Writing, and Career” -- https://lnkd.in/gPCK9akC   I am incredibly excited about this interview because Candace speaks to a wide range and depth of curiosities. Her related work ranges from reflecting on her journey as part of the BTS global fandom ARMY to curating museum exhibits to teaching writing with visual art and music to caring holistically for ourselves as writers and to navigating burnout. Candace describes the underlying motivations—the deep why—behind the range of questions she asks about social justice, cultural rhetorics, literacy, and writing. The most impactful Clarity Check ✅ for your personal statement is going paragraph by paragraph and asking yourself: “What do I want the reader to learn or understand about me from this paragraph?” And then make sure your writing actually reflects your intentions. This goes for any type of writing by the way… I spend much of my sessions helping clients land on the themes they most desire to express and making sure they ACTUALLY write them. Don’t make the reader guess. Don’t force the reader to assume. Be clear and say. the. thing. Here is an example: 🗣️ Client speaking: “I really want the reader to understand that my experiences with discrimination around my racial identity made me invested in other causes outside of my own and expanded my understanding of the struggles of other communities.” Good, WRITE THAT. Instead of 🛑: “I care about injustice because everyone should be treated with respect.” Do you see how much more specific and clear the first one is? Give the reader the truest insight you can offer them and don’t leave room for their own interpretation. It's that time of the month folks. Yesss, it's time to start looking forward to December's workshops! November was wonderful, we had some lovely new faces join and then come back (so I must be doing something right eh!). NEW FAMILY! We heard some gorgeous pieces of writing. All that good stuff you know I love to gobble up. I can't wait to see who trots along over the next few weeks, but I know it's going to be the best way I've Ever seen a year out. And so to business! KISS Keep it simple, stupid. One of my all-time favorite interview guests (Todd Rogers) & his colleagues just released a paper looking at WaPo & Upworthy headlines. They found headlines with shorter, more common words, and simpler grammar were more likely to earn a click. TL;DR: simple headlines are better than complex ones.  After all, who doesn't like a kiss?
