Suffolk Construction and H&A recently hosted a site tour of our Huntington Tower #construction project in Boston for high school students from the Dearborn STEM Academy. This field trip was part of the fourth annual monthly speaker series we developed to expose students from the Dearborn STEM Engineering Pathway to the built environment life cycle. For the speaker series, we collaborate with industry partners across the AEC spectrum, including a commercial developer (The HYM Investment Group, LLC), an architecture firm (DREAM Collaborative, LLC), a structural engineering firm (McNamara • Salvia, Structural Engineers), a civil engineering firm (Nitsch Engineering), and general contractors and trades (Suffolk Construction and Turner Construction Company). During the tour, H&A’s Jesse Siegel, P.E. explained how deep excavations are performed and how high-rise towers are supported on deep foundations bearing in bedrock. Following the tour, Allyson Wheelwright talked about #geotechnical and #environmentalengineering, including her career path, the history of filled land in Boston and local geology, and the role of the geotechnical and environmental engineer in construction.
