SAP has been pushing their customers the last 2 years to switch to a RISE-contract. This basically means you run your SAP-system on an SAP controlled cloud system. Lately their strategy is become even more aggressive by offering new functionality such as AI & Sustainability only to those customers that have a RISE-contract. I have mixed feelings about this approach since I’m not always convinced about the intentions of this. My cynical me thinks it’s a way for SAP to generate more and more predictable revenues and have more control over customers. SAP says RISE offers several advantages to customers such as more scalability, guaranteed up-time and is starting to offer extra services like secure data migration factories and using meta data from different SAP-systems to suggest improvements. Recently I read the article below from last year, from Michael McComb on how SAP’s RISE strategy contributes to their net zero ambitions. If a company wants to become net zero, it must not only eliminate their scope 1 & 2 emissions, but also their scope 3 emissions. SAP’s downstream scope 3 emissions account for 81% of their total emissions. Going RISE would give SAP more control over the cloud systems on which all the SAP-systems runs and thus enable them to reduce the scope 3 footprint. For me this logic makes sense and is valid and makes me a bit more receptive about the RISE approach.
