Why is my podcast not growing? Even though the barrier to entry for podcasting is pretty low, running a SUCCESSFUL podcast is harder than it may seem. It’s because unlike other pieces of media, podcasting is not directly tied to a search engine or a social media platform. YouTube videos can get discovered through search. TikToks and Reels can be found through scrolling on the respective social media platforms. But podcasts? There is no dedicated place to search, or come across them naturally. So how do we bridge the gap between your audience and your content? Short form video. I know, it’s intimidating. But before you run for the hills, hear me out. Short form video complements podcasting in a really convenient way because it solves the number one issue that podcasts face: discoverability. See, in today’s fast paced world listening to a WHOLE podcast episode is a commitment and a risk. If you don’t know what it’s going to be about or who is talking, it’s really hard to get yourself to take that risk and commit. But what if you could get a sneak peek of the content before you commit? This is where short form video comes in. By allowing potential listeners to sample parts of your podcast through short form videos you are giving them a taste of what your content is. This way, the listeners that aren’t right for your content will move on — no hard feelings — and the listeners you do want know what they’re getting into. Essentially, you get the best of both worlds: The discoverability of short form content, and the deep connection of long form content.

5 things I learned from appearing on some of the world's TOP podcasts AND my database of 1,000+ podcast contacts. Rule #1: When going on any podcast, you must add value to THEIR audience and YOURS. Here's how... 1️⃣ Storytelling is Key: Always share valuable lessons through your personal stories, mapping out your journey like a hero's journey (AKA Rag to Riches with the HOW?). This resonates deeply with listeners, which is why most movies/shows follow this framework. 2️⃣ Know Their Audience: Understand exactly who listens to the podcast before going on. Tailor your stories to meet the interests and expectations of this specific group. If you don't know...ask the host exactly, "Who are your listeners? What do they like/dislike?" 3️⃣ Clear Call to Action: Make it easy for listeners to connect with you. Have one clear call to action and repeat it during the podcast to reinforce your message. 4️⃣ Invest in Quality Gear: Don't underestimate the power of good audio. A decent $50 microphone and headphones can dramatically improve your audio presence. 5️⃣ Be Selective: Not all podcasts will benefit you, and you will not help all podcasts. Focus on those with a solid track record: at least 100 reviews, 100 episodes, and consistent recent uploads. Only consider others if they're highly relevant to your niche. A new podcast production client approached me last week and explained that they wanted help to create a podcast to promote their business. Mint, I thought - podcasts are bloody brilliant for helping you to build brand awareness. However they went on to say, “We’re thinking of talking about our wide-range of services and how they can solve our customer’s problems” Urgh no I thought. Actually, I didn’t have to think it, my face said it all! Your podcast isn’t a radio advert. Not only are your services boring (soz), no one cares about them apart from you- certainly not podcast listeners. They're there at that time to listen, they're not in 'purchase mode'. People listen to podcasts to hear stories and get something of value. So, how can you give your customers engaging content, something that they’ll not only value BUT also (the vital bit) showcase your brand as the place to go for this expertise - without it sounding like an advert or a sales pitch. Remember we switch adverts off, tune out or skip them - and your listener will do the same.

Are you only getting 15 views on your podcast episodes? Here are 4 points on how to improve your podcast as a business. First you need to understand that a podcast is not a discoverability tool, but it can provide massive credibility and expertise for your audience. Thumbnails They are not event banners, they are there to create curiosity. The Diary Of A CEO does an amazing job, with a quote or statement with the speaker's face in there. Title Don't add what episode it is or the podcast name. Title is there to set the expectation of what people get out of your podcast. Hook Easiest is to add some highlights in the beginning to cover the topics covered. Again DOAC does an amazing job at this with their trailer. Repurposing Podcasts are horrible for discoverability but the content is perfect for it. Create reels to post as YouTube shorts, LinkedIn, Instagram. Create text posts for LinkedIn, tag the guest to cross-promote. Write a newsletter for your email list. Each podcast episode can be repurposed into 20-40 pieces of content. Don't expect your guest to repost the podcast episode, to make it easier for them, create content like a reel, trailer, image, or written post, ...

What makes a great podcast? A few weeks ago, I shared my process for how to find podcasts for your business and/or topic. This past week, I attended the Podcast Party with Communication Queens, which had a more focussed strategy. Their goal is to make sure their clients are booked on top 1-5% of podcasts. What goes into that top 1-5%? At least 26 episodes published, with the last one in the past 90 days Reviews, downloads, and shares that indicate high audience engagement There were some other things I missed in the meeting, and I found this ranking system quite intriguing for my speaking clients. Plus, I'm a big fan of strategy, and realized that I could add some podcast topics to my list that I would not have bothered with in the past. More than anyone, I understand that numbers do NOT substitute for a great host and a great interview. However, if you are bringing your A-game as a guest, why not identify more strategic partnerships with hosts in the top 1%? What do you look for when it comes to podcast guesting opportunities? Do you also listen to previous episodes *before* you reach out?

A little-known way to help you maintain your weekly/biweekly podcast week after week. Change things up! It often becomes hard to have a guest on your podcast to maintain regularity, but your audience is looking forward to the next episode as always. So, now what, you do not have an episode recorded. Why not record a solo episode explaining the situation and something you did want your listeners to know? Why? - It shows the human side to the podcast and the struggle it can be sometimes. - Helps audience connect more authentically with you as the host. - Help build yourself into a confident speaker leading your way to a keynote speech one day. You might think what if I already do solo podcasts? Again chnage things up. How? - Re-telecast content of an episode which you think fits with a recent news or situation by recording a short intro. - If you do solo podcasts, high chances you yourself are a someone who is a speaker and do webinars, repurpose them into a podcast episode. - Finally have a guest on the podcast for a change. As long as you show up to your audience's expectations, they would not mind a few changes at times - better than ghosting them. Consider this post as your reminder to shake it up. P.S. 10 of the most useful podcast guesting tips ever 👇 1. Write for mobile -> 3 paragraphs, 300 words, 30 sec. reading time 2. Use simple words -> Bigger podcasts get up to 400 emails/month. Make sure they at least read your email to begin with… 3. Write like you speak -> You’re pitching for a podcast interview, which is a natural conversation. Start by being natural from your first email. 4. Double-check the name -> I’ve made the mistake myself to misspell the hosts’ name, great way to begin your email pitch… 5. Cut 30%-40% of what your write. - >There isn’t a reward for longest email. There is a reward to a positive attitude by getting booked on a podcast. 6. Pick an interesting topic -> Choose carefully what you want to talk about, some topic just don’t get you on podcasts. 7. Pick a captivating title -> Arouse curiosity in your title, but don’t give it all away just yet. Remember; the title’s sole purpose is to get the host to click and read your email. 8. Create a portfolio -> If the host read your email and is interested, streamline the booking process. Put your picture, show notes, previous podcast appearances, schedule, all social links in one spot. That’s most of the stuff I do with Novacast. 4 Ways to Introduce Your Podcast to Someone Else's Audience 61% of podcast listeners discover new podcasts through advertising within other podcasts. This means the easiest way to find a new audience is to collaborate with a similar podcast. That's why our producers are constantly seeking podcasts with a relevant audience and organizing advertising integrations or free cross-promotion opportunities. This is how we get a surge of new listeners. But many people don't know that cross-promotion can be done in various formats. Here are 4 of our favorites, starting with the least obvious: 1. Drop. Essentially, this is analogous to a repost on social media: you take someone else's content and place it on your feed with a small comment of your own. This also works in podcasts: you post an episode of someone else's podcast with your comment, and your partners do the same "repost" of your episode. 2. Crossover. You and your partners create an episode that combines elements and characters from your two podcasts. It's like The Avengers, but in the world of podcasting. 3. Hosting. Here, everything is even simpler: you and your partners take turns visiting each other's studio as guests. You can enhance the effect of guesting if you then also cross-drop these episodes - post them in both feeds. This will mix up the audience even more. 4. Integration. It sounds like your standard advertising insert, only this time you're not promoting a product or service, but a friendly podcast. You can make it simply informative or use one of your favorite creative formats. Podcasts are a playground to help non-writers think out loud. Because #podcasts are inherently too long. They’re free-flowing. They’re improvisational. They’re not tight. And if they’re good, they usually have a few really great moments that make each episode worth it. Writers think by writing. But there’s a lot of really smart people who need to talk out loud in order to think well. That’s how they get to the good idea. So maybe your podcast isn’t about the podcast. Maybe your podcast is an excuse. To give your guests - to give your CEO - a place to think out loud. To explore ideas. To stumble into magic. And then your #marketing job is to bottle it. It’s not about the podcast. It’s about that thing they said at the 27 minute mark. It’s that clip. That’s the headline became a story, became a media angle, became your new positioning, became your go to market strategy. Maybe a podcast is just a long-cut to get to the magic?
