The plant based offering has exploded over the last 5 years with lots of new entrants to the market. There are generally 2 ‘plant based’ models in the UK market 1️⃣ Those that manufacture in the UK in small(ish) factories. 2️⃣ Those that are trading by buying in product made in South East Asia (or similar) and selling into the UK market under a brand. Not every entrant can see it through whilst we wait for the market to mature further. As a proven, seasoned operational expert in the food manufacturing industry having worked with start ups and established operators I would further note: 🌱Many 'new' factories are being set up with seed capital based on products that have grown from someone's kitchen. 🌱Many factories I see are being built and run by people with little if any manufacturing or operational background. 🌱Understanding the processes and systems needed in the food industry is tough enough with experience, some major errors are being made by those people with none. Food manufacturing is complex, rules, audits, controls, IT systems & supply chain tools needed, procurement, supply negotiations and contracts, talent pool, automation, machine capability, layout, flow etc. 🌱Product range, limited customers, price point, economies of scale, too many SKUs, different formats for each retailer all add complexity without the volumes to make products commercially viable. Cost per unit is key. ⚠️the list of impacts is not restricted to plant based manufacturers. There is no magic wand for success – to avoid failure a factory needs processes, systems and competence to run. Food manufacturing is a complex business. #wefixfactories #duediligence #foodmanufacturing #operationalexcellence #success #profit #startup #challengerbrands

I attended a panel discussion this evening featuring the CEO of an emerging beverage chain based in California. Although I usually approach such events with an open mind, I was struck by the founder's strong assumptions, which seemed ineffective. I believe the food and beverage industry depends on strong systems that are key to driving success for the enterprise. Such systems are designed by top management with an intent to scale operations. However, founders who are unwilling to implement fool-proof systems, processes, SOPs, and a strong operational structure will face significant challenges. One cannot compromise delivery in the name of flexibility and openness. In fact, a lack of such structures can lead to a company's failure, not just inhibiting its growth. In my opinion, it's naive to assume that customers prefer varied experiences, particularly for a startup. Without creating a base experience and replicating it, some brands focus on varied experiences at the beginning, which is funny. Successful chains like McDonald's, Chick-fil-A Restaurants, and Starbucks rely on a standardized operational model to achieve growth. That's why they keep winning. Those who don't adopt such a model are unheard of in the market. #strategy #standardization #gotomarket UCI ANTrepreneur Center

🍕🍕🍕[PIZZA TALKS] How did Founder and CEO of GOPIZZA Global HQ come up with the firm’s business model while eating at a McDonalds restaurant? 🍕🍕🍕 In Seoul for the past few days where I caught up with Jae Won (Jay) Lim, Founder and Global CEO of GOPIZZA Global HQ. Started as a small food truck in South Korea, GOPIZZA Global HQ prides itself as a foodtech company with proprietary technology to allow it to bake single serve pizzas in just three minutes. The technology allows pizzas to be served just like fast food - no more long waiting times. The firm currently has a presence in major Asian markets including South Korea, Singapore and India with about 200 outlets. GOPIZZA Global HQ said it is the third largest pizza player in Singapore behind PizzaHut and Dominos. Jay said in earlier interviews that he came up with the idea of selling single serve pizzas, fast food style, while eating at a McDonalds restaurant. But what went through his mind at the moment? - That’s exactly what I must find out since I’ve got him with me in person. What am I most proud of? That was easy Sonalie Figueiras: The team at TiNDLE Foods . I recently had the honor of sharing my thoughts in an interview post-announcement of my departure as CEO from TiNDLE. As I look back, I am filled with gratitude for the milestones we've achieved: a strong financial foundation, a brand that has earned global respect, a solid infrastucture, great products, a promising pipeline and a team whose dedication has propelled us into major markets with unprecedented speed. The much leaner structure and much longer runway as a result of a deep restructuring exercise during 2023 hasn’t stopped us from growing, with volumes more than doubling from the previous year, a testament to our team's hard work and the innovative products that have won hearts across continents. This growth, coupled with a culture of resilience and adaptability, has set us on a sustainable path for the future. I shared insights on the importance of a measured approach to growth -especially when responding to both capital crunch and a slower category growth-, the complex interplay of consumer behavior, and the necessity for plant-based brands to innovate and educate continuously. As I transition to new adventures, my commitment to fostering sustainable practices and supporting the next wave of innovation remains steadfast. I'm excited about the road ahead, not just for myself, but for the plant-based industry. The full interview is a reflection of our collective journey at TiNDLE—full of challenges, learnings, and triumphs. I invite you to read it and share your thoughts with me. Let's continue to inspire and lead the charge towards a more sustainable future. #Leadership #Sustainability #TiNDLE #venturebuilding

Is this model applied in any corporate for specifically when we are trying to come up with suitable solutions. All the CEOs need to adopt this idea for critical discussions and we have to move from Chai Biscuits towards brilliant ideas and problems solutions. Our CEO suggested this idea many time, however it's time for implementation. #ceo #ideas #creativity

Dennis Hanley Brings Deep Experience to Gem City Market After a challenging first year of operation in 2022, the Gem City Market board of directors in Dayton, Ohio, contracted with Columinate and Dennis Hanley to design and implement a turnaround plan. He is now serving as long-term Manager on Contract. In June 2023, Food Co-op Initiative gave Gem City Market its Startup of the Year award. “If not for Dennis’s strong all-around leadership and big, bold moves, we would not be here. That took a lot of industry knowledge and leadership skills. We appreciate Dennis and Columinate, particularly how bold Dennis as been in executing a vision for store. That would have been beyond the courage of most others.” - Carrie Scarff, Gem City Market vice president Hanley commented on this exciting engagement: “Successful IGMs learn and assess the issues affecting poor performance and what the causes are in the operation. Understanding the capability of the team was so important in this situation; in Gem City Market there was no experience, and the team was afraid to take a risk. Positive re-enforcement builds up an inexperienced person to try, and they do. They learn how and what success is with someone guiding them and taking all the negative out of it. A retail strategy to compete to win is key. At Gem City Market, the driver in this community is fresh meat as well as fresh produce. The differentiation is not everything in perfect order, rather it is great prices on key items to wow the customers. Not only does a price of quality oxtails at $8.99/lb wow the customer, it gets the staff fired up, thus creating a vibe. It is placing the right people in the right spots to launch this kind of vibe." Read the full article here: https://co-op.link/my5
