Last week's World Vaccine Congress - Europe convened in Barcelona, with its agenda consisting of a largely predictable mix of clinical and scientific updates and manufacturing technology trends, also included discussions on pandemic preparedness, response and recovery in the wake of the COVID-19. Though inclusion of this thematic was constructive, a number of Multi-Nationals responded to the inequity of intervention access questioning by considering the provision of multi-dose vials to be sufficient action and/or that attitudes to vaccines in Africa were responsible for lower prioritisation of supplies to the continent - something akin to 'victim blaming'. Fortunately, there were some highlights - most notably the Africa CDC being present to showcase the work being done under the auspices of the African Union, by the Africa CDC via the Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing (PAVM). This initiative is enabling local manufacture of 60% of the continent's vaccine needs by 2040. Dr. Akhona Tshangela gave a comprehensive presentation on the Framework for Action in line with the New Public Health Order as well as taking the many booth visitors through the impact to date in terms of Saving Lives and Livelihoods. Four years ago today, we faced an unprecedented challenge in Iran's fight against COVID-19. Despite the ban on importing globally recognized vaccines, our medical community persevered, contributing to a crucial Phase 3 trial involving 24,000 participants. This experience highlighted the resilience and dedication of our healthcare professionals in the face of adversity. It also underscored the importance of scientific collaboration and innovation in addressing global health crises. As we reflect on this pivotal moment, we're reminded of the ongoing need for equitable access to life-saving vaccines worldwide. 💊 How can the quality, safety and availability of medicines further be ensured for patients all around the EU? This is one of the topics that the 27 EU ministers responsible for health discuss today Luxembourg with Frank Vandenbroucke chairing the meeting. 1/3 Ministers approve Council conclusions on the future of the European Health Union #EHU, which sets out key areas of focus and encourages the incoming European Commission to keep health as a priority in the coming years. 2/3 Ministers hold a policy debate on the incentives system in the pharmaceutical package, which aims to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines for EU patients and to harmonise the internal market. 3/3 Finally, ministers adopt a recommendation which sets out new measures on vaccine-preventable cancers, as part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. The recommendation aims to encourage the uptake and monitoring of vaccinations against human papillomaviruses (HPV) and Hepatitis B virus (HBV), which can cause cancer. #EU2024BE

"We’re trying to increase awareness, and to highlight the importance of focusing on clinical trials, research, which is an unending process for African nations, by increasing investments, enhancing clinical trial and research.” Investing in clinical trials in Africa is a never ending process due to the enormous gaps and the huge needs of our patients within the continent. I have shared few enlightening insights during The World Vaccine Congress.

Three weeks to go before the World Vaccine Congress in Barcelona.  At DRK Pharma we recognise the challenges of vaccine development, and we are working closely with our partners to address these issues, including the need to: 1.     Ensure that a vaccine is both safe and effective through rigorous testing in preclinical and clinical trials, against a diverse target population. 2.     Scale up production to manufacture vaccines at a global scale while maintaining quality and consistency. 3.     Meet regulatory requirements for vaccine approval, which can often be a long and costly process. Equally navigating different regulatory requirements in various countries can be a barrier to global vaccine distribution. 4.     Ensure that vaccines are affordable and accessible to people in low-income countries, as high production costs and distribution barriers can otherwise hinder equitable access. 5.     Convince the public to trust and accept vaccines, particularly in the face of misinformation or vaccine hesitancy. Addressing these challenges requires the collaborative efforts of scientists, researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the public to ensure the development and distribution of safe and effective vaccines to combat infectious diseases. CEPI AWARENESS CAMPAIGN VACCINES. CEPI supports vaccine Research and Development, manufacturing and equitable access. Vaccines produce this protective mechanism by effectively training the immune system to both recognize and fight pathogens. They won 🥇 first price for the poster “Pandemic Preparedness with ALiCE”🚀🚀 Good job Charles Williams Jim Nowak Jorge Armero Giménez Why should you care if we got this award? 😁 well, what this project is all about is being ready for the next outbreak or pandemic (remember Covid 😷). The aim is to be ready with a new vaccine within 100 days instead of 300+ days. After the 100 day mark Covid really kicked in and spread fast. So having a vaccine after 100 days makes a huge difference for you and me and everybody else living in an area with an outbreak. ALiCE can facilitate the quick development and production of a new vaccine 💉 and that is why we proudly are participating in a project where the ecosystem is being developed to support this. 🦠
