Sharing an important article by Ryan K. Smith, which tells the story of the struggle (still ongoing) for the Shockoe Hill African Burying Ground (the city of Richmond's 2nd African Burial Ground) and one of Virginia's most endangered historic places: "Disappearing the Enslaved The Destruction and Recovery of Richmond’s Second African Burial Ground" Buildings & Landscapes 27 (Spring 2020): 17-45 Abstract The hilltop at the intersection of Fifth and Hospital Streets in Richmond, Virginia, served as the city’s primary burial ground for enslaved and free blacks from 1816 through emancipation, making it one of the longest-serving and most populous burial grounds of its kind in the nation. The site’s early history and active use show its profound role in the lives of the city’s African American residents as well as intimate connections with resident whites buried in adjoining cemeteries. Yet today the burial ground stands as the site of an abandoned gas station, its historic core unrecognized like so many other smaller burial grounds for the enslaved elsewhere. By tracing the process of obliteration at Richmond’s “second African Burial Ground,” this article illustrates how those in power—in this case a New South coalition of government officials, city engineers, and private developers—worked to truncate the highly charged memorial landscape related to human remains. The loss of this immense burial ground, untouched in the scholarly literature until now, underscores how essential the landscape and even human bodies are for the maintenance of social space and memory. As this site continues to face threats by roadway and railway projects and a proposed auction, it poses a key challenge to the concept of material “integrity” at the heart of federal preservation guidelines that have placed such properties at a disadvantage. As descendants and activists work to reclaim this burial ground without benefit of archaeological discoveries, the historic importance of its destruction may offer one of its few ways forward... If you use detritus in speech, remember to stress the second syllable, as you do in the words arthritis and bronchitis. Once you've mastered its meaning and pronunciation, you’ll find that detritus is a term—originally a geology term referring to loose material, such as broken rock fragments, resulting from disintegration—that can be applied in many situations. After the first hard freeze of fall, gardens are littered with the detritus of summer’s plants and produce: stalks, leaves, vines, and maybe even an abandoned hand trowel. As a flood-swollen river retreats to its banks, it leaves detritus—debris gathered by the raging waters—in its wake. The detritus of civilization may include junkyards and abandoned buildings, while mental detritus may include all kinds of useless trivia. (We’re not saying it qualifies as such, but detritus comes from the Latin root deterere, meaning “to wear away, impair.”)

Fun Facts: Did you know Canning's conservation cleaning of Grand Central Terminal's ceiling revealed numerous signatures, names and dates, marriage, births and other milestones recorded by those who worked on the 1944 mural recreation. In these images, you can see the name J.V. Brophy was carved into Pegasus’ eye during the 1944 ceiling replacement and re-discovered during our cleaning process. The cleaning solution was specifically formulated to address the exact composition of the dirt to be removed, and the composition of the paint and gold-leaf surface beneath it. The remains of a centuries-old village near Fritch provide insight into how an Indigenous People lived in the Texas Panhandle. People of the Antelope Creek culture lived in this region for around 300 years, from roughly 1150 to 1450 AD. They built homes with stone foundations and walls made either of more stone or wattle and daub. About a mile away from one village was a quarry complex. Here, at what is now called Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, Antelope Creek people dug up underground flint—stronger than weathered aboveground stone—to make tools. At the quarry pits, stoneworkers made rough shapes called quarry blanks that they carried back to the village to refine into specific tools. These included knives, dart points, arrowheads, and hide-scrapers. As well as creating tools for their own use, the Antelope Creek people traded with a network of other groups. The colorful stone from this region of the Panhandle has been found in present-day Central Mexico, Montana, and the Mississippi River; meanwhile, stone, shell, and ceramics from New Mexico, Minnesota, and the Pacific coast have been found at Antelope Creek villages in Texas. In addition to the physical traces of their homes and stone manufacturing processes, the Antelope Creek people left behind petroglyphs—stone carvings.
