* Proposed Project* Blossom @gordonhuether – University of Rhode Island Fine Arts Center - | Kingston, RI | Laser-Cut Powder-Coated Metal Panels, Dichroic Glass | 14–15'H x 18'W Concept: Blossom takes its name from the form of the work and the metaphor of the blossoming of the creative spirit of artists. The design is meant to provide a respite from the stresses of academic pursuits and a transitional space that will bring students out of their classrooms and studios to the campus beyond. The artwork creates a space for casual gatherings and collaborative study. In addition, the design was inspired by the ‘theater in the round,’ evoking theaters of the ancient Greeks and Romans, and a contemporary theater arrangement where the audience can be fully engaged with the performance. Blossom is a gentle response to the strong architectural forms of the center while its materials of glass and cut steel provide an introduction to the light filled foyer of the new construction. Blossom is also inspired by organic and natural forms. With its eight soaring ‘petals’ grouped to form a circle, the reference to a floral form is clear. The resulting internal space is both sheltered and accessible. The selected materials for Blossom respond to both natural and artificial light sources, so that it remains an activated space throughout the day and night. Four of the petals will have panels of dichroic glass and four will be fabricated with laser-cut metal panels. Dichroic glass is a multi-colored glass that has reflective properties, creating a kaleidoscope reflection of colors when it is hit with light and viewed from different angles. Laser-cut metal has infinite possibilities. Patterns and shapes, whether representational or abstract, can communicate stories, symbols and themes. These patterns will create a symphony of shadow, constantly transforming under qualities of seasonal light and times of day. The City of Danville in partnership with the Danville Area Visitors Bureau, Downtown Danville, Inc.., Vermilion Advantage, and the Danville Public Library Foundation is excited to announce a new program for Downtown Danville property owners called “Arts in Alleys.” This matching grant program will be funded through partner organizations, along with grant funding and private donations. The vision for the program is to fill our Downtown alleys with art that inspires, improves the aesthetic of the area, and makes our alleys safer for pedestrians through partnership with property owners. We believe that this collaborative program will improve the health and wellbeing of all who live, play, and work in Danville, as art is vital to a meaningful life. Through the Arts in Alleys Program for Downtown Danville, IL, any Downtown Danville property owner with alley-facing property can participate in the program and request funding from the Arts in Alleys Program collaborative committee up to $10,000.00 per project. Eligible projects include wall murals, art installations, sculptures, light displays and art projections, and lighting that enhances the art installation. Property owners participating in the Arts in Alleys Program have set guidelines to participate: -Property must be alley-facing and within the Downtown Danville district. -Property owner must pay 50% of the total cost of the project. -Maximum contribution of $10,000 per project from the AIAP. -Artists must utilize materials suitable for exposure to the elements. -Final design/art concept must be approved by the AIAP Committee before the project begins. -Diversity must be reflected in art projects and/or selection of artists. -AIAP portion (50%) of the bill to be paid upon completion of the project. -Art installation must fit the theme, “Possibilities in Danville.” Property owners can apply until January 2025. Projects will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be vetted by the Arts in Alleys Program Committee, which consists of representatives from each of the partner organizations. Currently, the program has approximately $30,000.00 of earmarked funds, with an anticipated influx of funding from grant sources throughout 2024 and 2025. The program is anticipated to run until January of 2026, or until program funding is exhausted. **Aesthetic uniformity limits cultural expression** There's a tendency for design trends to converge towards a homogeneous international style. Architecture and design are forms of non-verbal communication that convey meaning about a region’s history, culture, and values. When these elements become standardised, cultural expression is reduced. For example, museums, which serve as custodians of cultural narratives, risk becoming indistinguishable from one another, offering similar visitor experiences regardless of their geographical or cultural context. These global trends dilute local cultural identities and traditions. Designers can combat this by taking a vernacular approach, by incorporating local materials, techniques, and motifs. By engaging local communities and artisans in the process we can ensure that the resulting architecture and design reflect the local context, establishing a true 'sense of place'. #designthinking Photo @unsplash

This fall, Mary Miss launched a citywide public art project in Milwaukee, a series of beacons announcing a new era for the city’s municipal water system. A pioneer of earth art since the 1960s, Miss’s early installations began as minimalist environmental sculptures constructed on the grounds of museums, parks, universities, and urban developments like Battery Park City. Made of rough industrial materials influenced by manufacturing and production facilities, the structures heightened the immediacy of spatial experience in relation to their surrounding natural environments. Several of these works are currently on display in Groundswell: Women of Land Art at Dallas’s Nasher Sculpture Center, on view through January 7, 2024. In 2008, Miss established the nonprofit City as Living Laboratory (CALL) in collaboration with founding director Olivia Georgia as a way to build capacity to realize complex science, art, and advocacy-based projects that engage diverse stakeholders, community organizations, government agencies, and development partners. Meanwhile, Miss’s ideas were expanding to larger-scale initiatives tied to the urgency of climate change. … Over the last three decades, Milwaukee has almost completely eliminated the harmful release of sewage through a combination of gray and green infrastructure projects like deep retention tunnels and restored wetlands, putting it far ahead of cities like Boston, Houston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New York City—many of them under court order to comply with provisions of the 1972 Clean Water Act requiring cities to prevent pollution of waterways during heavy rains. ↘ New Project — What Do You Make of This? Through exhibition design, interpretation, wayfinding, and branding systems, Kristine Matthews’ work expresses ideas in environments. This exhibition at the University of Washington’s Jacob Lawrence Gallery celebrates three threads that tie together her work: material exploration and sustainability, audience participation, and inclusive design. Each room of the gallery poses a different question for the audience to consider as they peruse projects spanning over 25 years. To minimize the environmental impact of the exhibition while still creating spaces with impact, various structures have been re-purposed from previous projects. The Re-Made framework was originally created as a prototype for the Give Me a Sign exhibition now on view at Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian in New York. The circular “What Were You Thinking?” structure in the second gallery was originally created for our Vacant Seattle installation at the 2021 Design Festival. The sawhorse tables in the main gallery come from the materials library/workroom at Studio Matthews. Cardboard, in various weights and colors, features throughout, allowing for easy recycling. The design, utilizing both the positive and negative of arrow and punctuation shapes, allows every scrap of the black cardboard sheets to be used. The exhibition will run through December 2nd, 2023. In Andratx, Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, what was once the largest chicken farm in the island chain, has adapted and been repurposed into an art gallery and cultural center. The original chicken coops on the property were converted to an art gallery, studios for visiting artists, and a theater. The main house on the property, which is over 300 years old, has been recently restored to be rused again as a space for visitors to stay as well as an office to oversee everyday activities on the property. The primary structure has been refurbished with the original materials used to build the home, leaving them exposed for a stronger connection to the historic prevalence of the property. An important part of the project was recycling and reusing as much of the original structures and materials as possible. The designers were able to repurpose old furniture, original stone and glass found around the site, and repurpose it within the renovations. Historic preservation and adaptive reuse projects such as this, bring new life and meaning to historical sites while also making sure they are maintained in the long term. While redevelopment can be carbon intensive, it is significantly less damaging than new construction overall. #Bestdesignsoftheyear lists should feel silly for anyone who is serious about design. And yet they always stir my curiosity. The headline ('A chunk of glossy sexiness') of The Guardian Design Review in my inbox did not promise too much for someone looking for #sustainabledesign but the newsletter was worth a closer look. The Right to Repair campaign – chosen by Henrik Taudorf Lorensen, CEO of TAKT – advocates for the right to find ways to repair products that are simpler and cheaper than tossing them into landfill. This new type of 'everyman's right to good products' is an excellent representative of the #morewithless approach we at Finimalism Project wish to promote. Could #repair become really big in 2024? There might be some hopeful signs. Something I'm personally looking forward to: "FIX: Care and Repair" Exhibition by Design Museum, Helsinki and Arkkitehtuurimuseo / Museum of Finnish Architecture, due to open in April.
