The European Council just published the strategic agenda for 2024-2029, with a vision to make Europe more free and democratic, strong and secure, and prosperous and competitive. On the topic of green transition, the path to climate neutrality by 2050 is confirmed, harnessing ‘the potential of the green and digital transitions to create the markets, industries and high-quality jobs of the future.’ A just and fair climate transition is pursued, accelerating the energy transition, which will require ‘ambitious electrification using all net-zero and low carbon solutions, and investments in grids, storage and interconnections.’ To increase real income and purchasing power, a more circular and resource-efficient economy will be developed, referencing clean technologies, the bioeconomy and clean and smart mobility. While a competitive, sustainable and resilient agricultural sector is promoted, nature will continue to be protected, degradation of ecosystems reversed and water resilience strengthened. Tomorrow, Joojin Kim from Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션) will be joining Center for American Progress and WWF's #COP28 event "U.S. Action on Clean Trade and Transparent Supply Chains for Climate and Nature" to discuss how emerging trends and trade policies may impact #supplychains and #steeldecarbonization. This session offers a view into how an integrated U.S. clean trade approach covering clean energy supply chains, CBAM policy, and deforestation and conversion-free (DCF) supply chains can drive leadership on trade and improved global markets. U.S. Senators Tom Carper, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Brian Schatz will highlight actions corporations can take to increase transparent, low-carbon and nature-positive supply chains. Today, I participated in the next session of the Climate Ambition Accelerator of the UN Global Compact Netzwerk Deutschland, focusing on Science-Based Targets (SBTs) and Transition Plans as the bridge between greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and climate objectives. By taking part with my colleagues Birte Richter, Gudrun Beckh and Valentin Güttler in this initiative, we gathered insights into driving progress towards a low-carbon future and tackling climate change. At its core, the six-month Climate Ambition Accelerator encourages peer learning and knowledge sharing among participating companies. This emphasis on collaboration underscores the understanding that decarbonization is a collective endeavor. By leveraging the diverse experiences and expertise of fellow participants, we can accelerate our transition to a sustainable, resilient future. I am proud to take action within the HÖRMANN Gruppe to implement the new insights gained from the Climate Ambition Accelerator and valuable exchange with other participants Our collective efforts will undoubtedly propel us towards a more sustainable and resilient future, aligned with our commitment to combatting climate change and driving positive environmental impact. #ClimateAction #UNGlobalCompact #Decarbonization #wirsindhörmann

COP28 and the Carbon Market: A Turning Point for Climate Action Just wrapped an exceptional webinar on the impact of COP28 on carbon markets. A huge thank you to our esteemed panelists Alexia Kelly, Kelley Kizzier, Mark Kenber, and Scarlett Benson, who brought invaluable insights. Here's a snapshot of the vital insights shared: Voluntary Carbon Markets at the Forefront: The #VCM has evolved from a supporting role to a key part of both corporate and national decarbonization strategies. Its potential to significantly boost finance for climate mitigation, especially in developing countries, and pave the way for Paris compliance markets, is now widely acknowledged. Financial Markets Are Tuning In: We are witnessing a significant shift as financial markets and key regulators increasingly focus on carbon credits, underlining their growing importance in corporate strategies. Philanthropy's Strategic Role: Far from just being a supporter, philanthropy is actively sculpting initiatives like SBTI, VCMI, The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), and the Energy Transition Accelerator, fostering high-integrity, high-impact carbon markets. The COP28 Joint Statement from 10 leading philanthropies indicating support of high integrity carbon credits provides much-needed confidence to all market stakeholders. Enhancing Corporate Engagement and Credibility: The launch of the complete VCMI claims code and Scope 3 Flexibility Claim (in beta) marks a significant step in incentivizing corporate investment in carbon markets. However, this also brings to light essential challenges like robust intervention level accounting and monitoring corporate progress towards interim net zero targets that will be tackled in 2024. Alexia aptly remarked, "I think next year will be even busier than last year, which is terrifying!" Terrifying, perhaps, but also so critically important to our collective future!
