What drives you?
I am driven by the idea and vision of giving the creators of value, their shot at success. I am setting up the organisations and mechanics to create a cascade effect, a legacy, a profession of tech company builders.
This week I was reminded of great legacies from the past, inspiration to look back in order to move forwards, by 3 amazing speakers at Venture.Community Events organised by Nick Dytczak Midworth from Ampere Events.
Cris Auditore Zimmermann from Medici Legacy spoke of Florence and Cosimo Medici, and the legacy of family, the extended family of creators in the city, that drove the renaissance, and an age of human design and aesthetic that leaves a global impression today in fashion, food, art, engineering, architecture and science.
Charles Turner DL master cutler spoke of Sheffield’s legacy in cutting tools, 400 years of The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire that drove the industrial revolution and supplied 90% of the worlds steel at one point. A city of materials science with a legacy left to the manufacturing industry, the medical device industry and The University of Sheffield and AMRC.
Philipp Ahrenkiel spoke about his work, having a legacy in his family of 120 years of shipping, a legacy that he now uses to drive carbon efficiencies in the shippping industry and he is helping build ventures and give others their shot in the industry with his work at Flagship Founders.
The common theme is people who have achieved excellence in their trade, but chosen to leave a legacy on their cities and industries lasting hundreds of years - this legacy is not through competition but coopetition, cooperation and collaboration, the empowerment and support of excellence in others which gains critical mass and brings about huge societal value.
I choose this, and so do my cooperators in Venture.Community cooperatives. We are empowering the company builders of tomorrow, and they will empower the next generation.
We must look back for inspiration to accelerate forward.
