Volunteer coordinators…do you do volunteer exit interviews? If you don’t, you should! Unlike employment exit interviews, when a person may not give their honest feedback for many reasons, a volunteer is more likely to share their thoughts because a last paycheck, co-worker friendship, professional recommendation and industry reputation are not on the line. So why don’t all non-profits ask? Are they afraid to know the truth or do they simply not have a desire to actually change anything if they had the information? Back story: I recently ended a volunteer relationship where I contributed 5-10 hours per month. Do you send your interview questions out in advance? Last week was the first time I was interviewing in the new role and I was over the moon to see that as an organisation, we send questions out in advance. This should be a standard process nowadays as why wouldn't you? I interviewed 7 amazing candidates, who all did a really good job 👏 I have then spent alot of my time giving them feedback across the questions and tasks, so they can understand why they scored lower and how to improve their answers to be top scoring. So many of the candidates commented on both these processes as being ones that really made the process enjoyable and a journey to learn. So, does your organisation do this yet? Do you share interview questions in advance? There's no doubt that sharing interview questions with all candidates in advance makes for a higher quality interview, but the equity vs equality debate means the jury's out on whether this is actually best practice when it comes to inclusive interviews. Personally, I'm yet to hear good reasons not to offer interview questions in advance to all candidates. I absolutely want to be fair in the approach, but... - How do you justify who 'needs' them in advance? - Why would we not want all the candidates to have a better chance to showcase their skills and what they would bring to the role? - Why do we have such a cloak and dagger approach to job interviews when most roles don't require people to think on their feet? I'd rather hire somebody who can do the job vs someone who can talk a good talk on the spot (unless I needed a spin doctor perhaps...) Working in recruitment you see so many different approaches to interviews but one that I truly think is great and see a lot of positive reactions from candidates is sharing interview questions in advance of interviews 🙌. It's interesting to hear how NSPCC has found it and I feel it's an important step forward in the recruitment process. As a recruiter focused on the housing and support sector, It's to see NSPCC's new initiative of sharing interview questions with candidates ahead of time. This small but mighty change can make the recruitment process so much more inclusive and candidate-centric.   Many dedicated candidates in the third sector aren't focused on learning the latest interview techniques. When questions come out of left field, it can be an obstacle for those who don't regularly interview. Getting the questions in advance allows all candidates to thoughtfully prepare responses and authentically present their skills and experiences.    I believe NSPCC's initiative will not only expand their talent pool, but also make the process far more inclusive for candidates. By reducing interview anxiety and allowing candidates to fully showcase their skills, this approach stands to unlock a wider range of qualified applicants. In addition, it demonstrates a commitment to fairness and transparency in the hiring process.   I would be interested to hear the opinions of my connections on this topic. Old clothes, a meal then a skill We just celebrated Mandela day on the 18th/07/2023 we were celebrating the icon that got us to be considered for opportunities as our fellow colleagues of colour and we really appreciate the effort. THE TIME IS NOW….. we really need to work on changing the status quo and we need to be conscious in our actions. Let’s take a step back Nelson Mandela International Day, also known as Mandela Day, is celebrated on July 18 each year. The day remembers Mandela’s achievements in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, human rights, peace, and reconciliation. Mandela Day was created to inspire people to embrace the values of democracy and contribute towards the ideals of ensuring a just and fair society.   President Jacob Zuma first introduced the concept of Nelson Mandela Day in 2009, to motivate a nationwide campaign to get the public involved in charitable activities. In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly paid tribute to Mandela by adopting a resolution to make the international community aware of his humanitarian work.   The Mandela Day Campaign message encourages people to use 67 minutes of their time to support a chosen charity or serve in their local community. The 67 minutes represent the number of years the former President fought for human rights and the abolition of apartheid.   Mandela Day is a call for action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did. It was packaged around charitable activities, are we able to change this to be economical activities? The gesture of collecting all clothes for the kids in fosters should be a monthly activity not only once a year so that we get to the point where the kids have clothes always. So, that this gives us the upper arm of then focusing on other activities such as giving the kids clothes monthly and then on the Mandela day we can then offer them a relevant skill that will set them in a better position tomorrow.
