Developing a speaking career won’t happen overnight, but, here’s what I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt. The more you speak, the more you’ll speak. Finding success in the speaking business means that you’re out there, building relationships with the people in the room. One day, the stars will align, and the right person will be in the right room, and they’ll say “wow, that speaker is exactly what we’re looking for.” But the odds of that happening at your first, or second, or tenth gig are slim. You have to start speaking, and keep speaking to build a career out of it.
Facts Grant Baldwin That’s why it’s always a good reason to speak for free at first. Jump on podcasts, volunteer your time as a speaker at conferences, host LinkedIn events. The whole point is to get you visible. The more visibile you are, the greater your chances of success. In the speaking business building momentum is too important.
I never regret any time when I jumped in and started talking out of nowhere. One of my mentors always said, you should listen more and speak less. Yess I agree but you should be practicing your pitch and your perspectives to see whether they are good or you should improve them.
it's about playing the long game, embracing each chance to speak as another step toward where you want to be. and it's those steps, compounded over time, that build a sustainable, thriving speaking career.
It only takes 1! Rory Vaden, MBA CSP CPAE says "it takes 1000 gigs to become a great speaker. so just get there!"
Thank you Grant! It all sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But why do you so few people do it. Great insights, brother👏

3wGrant, it’s inarguably true. Was hired by & presented at meetings for the South Dakota Telecommunications Association, and now another state in that industry has booked me. Way leads on to way.
