17 years ago, I became a speaker with no roadmap for my future. I was an ex-youth pastor who had a message and felt great on stage, but I didn’t know how to get booked and paid, and I sure as heck didn’t know how to grow my speaking business! During college, I did a little work for a full-time speaker. So I understood the behind-the-scenes work, like scheduling and booking gigs, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to go from nothing to something as a business. When my wife, Shelia, got pregnant with our oldest daughter, I really started thinking about what I wanted to do with my life… The one thing I couldn’t stop coming back to was speaking. I loved it, and I wanted to do more of it… This is where my journey to become a full-time speaker starts. I started using Google to find contact information for speakers. I started emailing, stalking, and lightly harassing them with my questions about building a speaking career. In the process, I learned a lot, but I also met a guy who was hosting a speaker boot camp training in Dallas. I opted to attend and couldn’t stop thinking about how I wanted to pursue speaking full time. From there, I got to work. I spent hours selecting a problem to solve, putting together my talk, pulling together my marketing materials, acquiring paid gigs, and knowing when and how to scale for my industry. I had many wins and many losses, but through a lot of hard work, I figured out that there was a very clear process to finding success in this field, and if you figured out the process, you would be really successful. For me, building a speaking career was about learning the rules of the game. I wanted to speak, I loved it, and I thought I would be good at it. AND I was willing to put in the work to learn the game. Anyone can be a speaker, but if you want to build a speaking business, you have to go one step further. 💪 Thinking about building your own speaking business? An non-typical way to grow your speaking business... When people start in professional speaking / training, they commonly run into this problem Booking a gig can be hard in the early stages But after you've gotten one and you do all the hard work to deliver Where you get the next one? Most people tell you to find your next org/company to work with Because most departments don't need a speech or training every week So where do we look next? Technical skills are overrated. In my work with accountants, financial experts, and property specialists, I've witnessed firsthand that technical expertise alone isn't enough for business success. The most successful entrepreneurs are masters at communicating their value. I believe it's more important to excel at communicating your value rather than solely mastering technical skills. Here's how: 1. Practice Pitching/Public Speaking. Hone your pitching and public speaking skills by joining Toastmasters or a similar public speaking group, where you can practice and receive feedback from experienced speakers. 2. Embrace Improvisation. Develop quick thinking and adaptability through improv training. Participate in improv theater or comedy classes to boost your spontaneity and creativity in communication. 3. Cultivate Self-Awareness. Enhance your self-awareness by seeking feedback from peers and mentors, and consider personality assessments like Myers-Briggs, Wealth Dynamics or DISC to better understand your communication style. 4. Build Your Personal Brand. Take actionable steps to build your brand by creating a professional website, optimizing your LinkedIn profile, and sharing valuable content/portfolio/case studies showcasing your expertise. What's one action you're taking to improve the way that you communicate your value?

Stop whining and build it yourself. → You're not getting attention → You're not speaking to crowds → Your message isn't getting out there Then get out there and do it yourself. What does this mean? Allow me to explain. Let's say you want to be a public speaker. Conventional advice tells you to: → Have a keynote speech lined up → Make sure you have a solid sizzle reel → Don't forget to join a speaker's bureau → Oh, and you'll definitely need to have an agent Wrong. This costs you time and money. And it won't always guarantee success. Instead: → Focus on ONE person at a time → Start setting up your own sessions → Speak on Zoom calls, lives, for free, anything → Build up your personal brand and post videos Do this for 2-3 years. Read that again. Do this for 2-3 YEARS. If you want to book a speaking event then? You'll be able to. And sure: → You can hire an agent → You can have a speaking kit → You can join a speaker's bureau But at this point? You can do WAY more because you'll have a personal brand. It's been almost 6 months since I decided to walk away from corporate life and start my own business, Seeds to Roses. And I haven't looked back since. Some fun numbers to share: 1️⃣ 2️⃣ I've had a total of 12 clients in the past 6 months (and feeling proud of the progress made) ✨ 6️⃣ Somehow, the client roster breakdown across the two parts of my business has been equal! 6 marketing clients, 6 public speaking clients (this was not intentional, and I am currently at capacity with marketing clients) 💸 The majority of my earnings come from marketing consulting (87%), compared to 13% from public speaking coaching 🕑 In a given week, I spend ~85% of my time on marketing consulting and ~15% of my time on public speaking (this was also not intentional, so I am relieved to see the alignment btw time spent vs earnings). A takeaway: I will continue to take on public speaking clients because (1) it's rewarding and I enjoy doing it and (2) it adds variety to my week. 🤑 Total revenue in the first two quarters... well, that's none of your business! (But this month, I'll make more than I did at my last job) -🌹 PS: I'm rooting for myself.

🌟What is your speaking purpose? AND before you answer, I don't mean your emotional why but your business why... I hear a lot of speakers say, "I want to be on big stages and command 5 figures a talk." 🤔Okay... and how does that fit into your business plan and vision? And is there ego behind wanting that level of pay and fame? Listen, there is nothing wrong with wanting to command high pay and be recognized for your work but I see way too many people doing it because of their ego as opposed to their real desire to serve. 📍First you need to understand your big vision and take a look at where you are in your career. Then break it down in into a strategy based on where you are and what the next step is. In this video, I share the 2 types of speaking gigs. 1. "Free" speaking which isn't free if you're getting in front of your ideal clients. Even though I'm a 5 figure speaker, I will occasionally do one of these gigs if I know I can bring in at least 30K+ in business. 2. Paid speaking. This will be depend on what market you are and where you are your career in terms of expertise and credentials. There are certain markets that simply don't pay and there are other markets that pay beautifully. Within the paying market, you have anything from the big keynotes opportunities to break outs workshops, trainings and more. ➡️Tell me in the comments which type of speaker you want to be. ✅️And...
