I help speakers get booked & paid to speak | Founder and CEO at The Speaker Lab

17 years ago, I became a speaker with no roadmap for my future. I was an ex-youth pastor who had a message and felt great on stage, but I didn’t know how to get booked and paid, and I sure as heck didn’t know how to grow my speaking business! During college, I did a little work for a full-time speaker. So I understood the behind-the-scenes work, like scheduling and booking gigs, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to go from nothing to something as a business. When my wife, Shelia, got pregnant with our oldest daughter, I really started thinking about what I wanted to do with my life… The one thing I couldn’t stop coming back to was speaking. I loved it, and I wanted to do more of it… This is where my journey to become a full-time speaker starts. I started using Google to find contact information for speakers. I started emailing, stalking, and lightly harassing them with my questions about building a speaking career. In the process, I learned a lot, but I also met a guy who was hosting a speaker boot camp training in Dallas. I opted to attend and couldn’t stop thinking about how I wanted to pursue speaking full time. From there, I got to work. I spent hours selecting a problem to solve, putting together my talk, pulling together my marketing materials, acquiring paid gigs, and knowing when and how to scale for my industry. I had many wins and many losses, but through a lot of hard work, I figured out that there was a very clear process to finding success in this field, and if you figured out the process, you would be really successful. For me, building a speaking career was about learning the rules of the game. I wanted to speak, I loved it, and I thought I would be good at it. AND I was willing to put in the work to learn the game. Anyone can be a speaker, but if you want to build a speaking business, you have to go one step further. 💪 Thinking about building your own speaking business? Follow along, I share tips, tricks, and resources to help you build a speaking business and impact the world.
