I’ve been working away in the background on a new project. I want to uncover the stories behind our clothes after we bought them – the ones we cherished and wore until the end of their lifecycle, and the ones that ended up collecting dust. This survey isn't just about clothes; it's about influencing fashion supply chains. The survey is part of the WINW Initiative which is on a mission to encourage retailers to adapt their supply chains to keep clothes in circulation for longer. To help do this, the survey will gather insights into the lifecycle of garments once the traditional retail transaction has ended. I want to know what happened to items in your wardrobe after you bought them. Did they become staples for years, or did they shrink even though you washed them correctly? Did they fall apart after a couple of wears? Was the fit wrong, so you recycled them?  I want to hear your story. It's easy to participate! We should think of fashion items as our babies. Not in a controversial way, hear me out. → Just like babies, clothes have 2 phases of production and development. When people have a baby its ‘production’ starts with ‘raw materials’ and goes on for 9 months until the baby is born. With birth, however, the development of the baby is not yet finished, it has actually just begun. The same is true with clothes, coinciding with the baby's birth, when clothes arrive at the store their life after production is just beginning. Our hands should not be the last to hold it, they should be the first ones to weave more story into it, making it evolve over time instead of decreasing in value.   Consumers often perceive value in a finished product. We will judge it on the store shelves and if it looks and feels right that is usually enough to make the decision. Such a view deprives us of a whole chunk of the item’s story that started way back with raw material production, probably some years earlier and hundreds of hands before ours. This gap between the finished product and the holistic product image is one of the enablers of harmful practices along fashion supply and value chains. Considering consumers’ positive attitudes towards sustainability, bearing items' whole story in mind would arguably change how they judge and perceive fashion items’ value, ultimately influencing their purchase decisions and habits. We need to shift the perception of fashion items from finished products to ‘living’ (evolving) entities. We should continue to weave value into our clothes long after they leave the store by maintaining and evolving their appearance, fit and style along with ours. Investing our time into such practices strengthens the sentiment and increases items’ value, making us less likely to discard them lightheartedly. I’ve got a little challenge for you. Try and think of that item that was knitted for you by grandma/ custom made/ special thrift gem/ given by mom or dad (etc). How do you think about them? How do they make you feel? As an account manager, I help companies reduce their energy consumption, and sustainability is a huge passion of mine. This naturally extends to my clothing choices. While I love clothes and expressing myself through fashion, I believe true style goes beyond chasing fleeting trends. I recently, "Worn" by Sofi Thanhauser and it opened my eyes to the complex stories behind every garment. It’s about five fibres: linen, cotton, silk, synthetics and wool. Thanhauser exposes the harsh realities of the fast fashion industry, from its exploitative labor practices to its devastating environmental consequences. It's a wake-up call, urging us to consider the true cost of the clothes we wear. For me, being stylish isn't about keeping up with the latest fads. It's about building a wardrobe of timeless pieces that seamlessly blend and offer endless outfit combinations.
