🚚 The first #hydrogen refrigerator trailer in #Spain is launched by #Mercadona. ⚡🚚 Disfrimur, Westport Fuel Systems, Scale Gas (a subsidiary of Engás) and Versallis Tech Services have carried out a project to test the first hydrogen-powered refrigerated trailer in Spain with Mercadona. 🇪🇸 Specifically, Disfrimur carried out a route to transport refrigerated goods, with a truck equipped by Westport with HPDI TM technology and powered by hydrogen, between Mercadona's logistics centres in Ciempozuelos and Getafe. 🚛🍊 The vehicle refuelled at the Scale Gas hydrogen plant, while Versallis was in charge of the technical support and coordination of the operation. 🔌💼 This initiative has been described as "comprehensive and pioneering on a national level, paving the way towards greener and more efficient transport in the Spanish capital". 💡🌍 Looking ahead, it is hoped that this demonstration will help raise awareness of how hydrogen can contribute to cleaner heavy transport today, with a competitive total cost of ownership compared to traditional fossil fuel technologies. 🌿🚛 Read more: https://bit.ly/3ZSFXHh #Hydrogen #SustainableTransportation #Mercadona #Innovation #Spain

When the industry doesn't provide answers, we must look for them ourselves! Fost Plus, Comeos and Fevia, the federation of the Belgian food industry claim that their proposition of #DigitalDepositReturnSystem is THE solution to the litter problem in Belgium. But so far, in spite of hundreds of thousands euros invested in pilot projects, the answers are still kept waiting 🤔. That is why our environmental NGO asked Eunomia Research & Consulting - a study bureau expert in circular economy and DRS - to make an assessment of the current DDRS proposition (which they name 'Serialized DRS'). Main conclusions of this in-depth report, this proposed system: 👉 Is years from being ready (certainly not for 2025) ⏰ 👉 Will exclude people (a.o digitally impaired, tourists, people in vulnerable positions) 📱🚫 👉 Environmental impacts will be way smaller than with the well-known classic system. That is, lower impact on #litter, high-quality #recycling, and compatibility with #reuse. 🌎 "The study has identified numerous problems, which make it clear that DDRS is a dead end. Wallonia and Brussels have already opted for a classic system.  It is now important to work with Flanders to ensure a well-functioning nation-wide system in which points of sale give consumers their money back as they should" So Céline Tellier, Alain Maron, Zuhal Demir, let's make this real for 2025! 𝐍𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞: 𝐆𝐞𝐛𝐫. 𝐇𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐕𝐎 Last year, the Sustainability Summit at the Gebr. Heinemann logistics center in Hamburg-Allermöhe showed what successful collaboration looks like: Heinemann organized a collaborative workshop comprising freight forwarders, truck manufacturers, and innovative start-ups. The aim of the meeting was to brainstorm ideas and jointly develop action plans to significantly reduce CO2e emissions. This is a burning issue for Gebr. Heinemann, as ambitious sustainability goals are a key part of the company goals. And the supply chain is responsible for a large part of the company’s carbon footprint. Now, a first notable development is the change in the fuel sources for trucks going from Allermöhe to Hamburg Airport as well as several Full truck loads going to Norway and Denmark. Previously dependent on diesel, these trucks now predominantly use hydrotreated vegetable oils - or HVO for short. HVO is a biofuel derived from waste and used vegetable oil. This transition is expected to result in a remarkable 90% reduction in CO2e emissions. Until now, the use of HVO has been difficult because it was not allowed to be sold in Germany, but only in neighboring countries. For example, the route from Allermöhe to Oslo has been able to be operated by HVO-fueled trucks since May 2022. The sale of HVO has been permitted in Germany since mid-April. Gebr. Heinemann will rely on HVO for the transportation of its goods in future wherever possible. Sabrina Naumann, Supply Chain Network Manager at Gebr. Heinemann says: "Switching to HVO is an important step, and the result of our trusted partnerships with freight forwarders. However, our vision does not stop here. We see even more potential in the employment of e-trucks." Good op-ed in El Nuevo Dia today. It make two main points: 1. Cancellation of the LUMA contract is nonsensical. Even if it happened, it would be a 4-year process before a different private company would be in place, and there’s no reason to guess that company would work out any better than LUMA. Better to make the best of what we’ve got. 2. Electricity demand is going up for various reasons (according to the article, peak demand has risen from 3,000 to 3,400MW since 2020). Some of the reasons for increased electricity sales overall include climate change resulting in hotter temperatures (thus a LOT more electricity demand for air conditioning than “normal”) and, also: “Paradoxically, two other causes have to do with the period of bonanza that the Puerto Rican economy is going through. The more activity, the more consumption. And, although emerging, modernity also adds kilowatts. Experts point out that the growth of the electric car fleet is affecting night demand, since the volume of cargo of these vehicles is equivalent to leaving the four burners of a stove on overnight.”
