A Hallmark Farewell: Michael Körper's unrivaled success in indoor hockey and (as my modest personal note) why failure and resilience might have been key to becoming the world's most successful indoor hockey player to date...
Having missed the opportunity to do it personally yesterday after the European Club Championships final in Vienna through coaching commitments, decency dictates to pay tribute to and reflect a bit on the remarkable career of my former teammate, Michael Körper, who bids farewell to the national team after an extraordinary journey spanning 20 years, 273 international matches, and over 300 goals. With an impressive tally of 12 medals, he stands as the most successful indoor hockey player in the world.
I recall our shared moment at the 2007 World Championship in Vienna, a pivotal match against Poland where a draw would have secured a spot in the semifinals. In the dying moments, Austria earned a crucial short corner, and Michael, in a heart-wrenching twist of fate, narrowly missed the target, leading to a sixth-place finish. The disappointment was palpable, not only for the more experienced players seeing probably their last chance of a world cup medal in their careers going by, but especially for the young, aspiring Michael, the tragic figure of our Austrian team.
However, this setback supposingly marked the genesis of Michael Körper's determined journey (Michi, please correct me if I am wrong!). He ventured abroad, first to Munich and then to Hamburg, honing his skills and notably perfecting his penalty corners, the very aspect that eluded him in 2007. Thus began a career unparalleled in indoor hockey, boasting two World Championships (2018, 2023), three European Championships (2010, 2018, 2022), a World Silver, a World Bronze, three European Silver, and two European Bronze medals. Michael claimed the title of Top Scorer in the German Bundesliga ten times, the European Top Scorer in 2018, and the World Top Scorer in 2023. Undoubtedly, he stands as the world's most successful indoor hockey player to date.
In essence, this journey underscores that sustained success requires both failure and resilience, coupled with patience, determination, discipline, and ambition. It shows that inner focus and ego do not necessarily harm team spirit, if balanced well and being sharply aware of. Moreover, it emphasizes that leadership entails supporting the next generation to surpass the achievements of their predecessors.
As we bid farewell to Michael Körper, I invite you to watch his Farewell Video, a tribute to a player who has not only shaped the narrative of Austrian hockey but has also become the most successful athlete globally in his sport. Let us extend our heartfelt appreciation and well-deserved honor to a true legend. 🏑🌟 #MichaelKörper #HallenhockeyLegend #Farewell
