Latest update on the 39th GTI workshop and GTI summit at MWC

The South Bend-Elkhart Region in Indiana (St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall Counties) had zero Phase I and II #SBIR|#STTR awards in FY 2016, ranking dead last in the state. In FY 2023, SBE Region businesses took home $24.1M in Phase I and II SBIR|STTR awards - more than the rest of the state combined. FY 2024 is shaping up as another record year, with awards approaching $40M. Many of these businesses are new entrants into the #defenseindustrialbase. As the Managing Director of Thomas Frost Executive, a people focussed executive search business, I see the banking and finance industry's attempts to improve its diversity on a daily basis. I also see the resistance, the support, the fear and the optimism of this agenda, and I can to a greater or lesser extent understand each of these behaviours or feelings. Numerous studies have highlighted the correlation between gender diversity and enhanced financial performance. McKinsey’s "Delivering Through Diversity" report showed that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 21% more likely to outperform on profitability. But it's not just about the bottom line. Diversity ignites innovation. Research conducted by BCG reveals that diverse teams generate nearly 20% higher revenue from innovation. When we apply this to the financial services industry, it's evident that a variety of perspectives encourages the development of novel products, processes and services that deliver most effectively to our notably diverse customer base. Some people need numbers to be convinced of a good idea. For me though – greater gender diversity in banking, or in plumbing, or in… ‘astronauting’ for that matter feels right. As a parent, I want my children to have equal opportunities as they enter the workforce with neither a gender based unfair advantage or unfair disadvantage and I believe that with the ongoing efforts of the people in the room on Friday, their chances will be much improved. It’s important to acknowledge that this won’t happen overnight, however quiet acceptance and passive patience are not helpful allies in this goal. What we need is community, commitment and resilience.
