With South Korea-China relations relatively stagnant, or even deteriorating, since the inauguration of the Yoon Suk Yeol government, there are many voices calling for the restoration of cooperative relations and a search for improvement. To this end, it is necessary to start with an accurate diagnosis of the fundamental causes of the current crisis in South Korea-China relations. It is not in the bilateral relationship itself, but rather the contradictory structure of the trilateral relationship among South Korea, the United States and China. The Korean Peninsula has now fallen into the “trap of a triangular structure” commonly experienced in Korea’s history. Therefore, the idea of improving the Korea-China cooperative relationship by simply stitching the two countries together doesn’t address the underlying problems and is not sustainable. The best way to escape the trap of the triangular structure is cooperation between South Korea and China. Lessons and implications from history will be helpful in initiating this. This essay underscores the importance of balanced diplomacy, preventive diplomacy, self-discipline and self-determination, as well as domestic political integration in the future of South Korea-China relations. https://lnkd.in/gjYdC9WC

In my latest co-authored piece for The National Interest, we argue Taiwan's New Southbound Policy & its engagement with countries particularly India & Australia have become a unique tool to address China’s aggression. To enhance its prominence in the region, Taiwan must maintain & advance the New Southbound Policy consistently. Given China's consistent defiance of the rule of law & its threats to the rules-based order, it becomes increasingly vital for Asia to mirror Taiwan's eagerness for engagement. https://lnkd.in/eMGDdS-f

This is an unbelievable development. The European Parliament has taken a courageous, unequivocal stand on Taiwan. Effectively, they are dumping any “One China principle/policy.” We are now likely to see the following: (1) China will most certainly fire off all kinds of inflammatory rhetoric and even economic sanctions against the EU in retaliation for this (it would not surprise me to see the PRC shill UNFW Department kick in in the comments section to this very post); (2) It would be surprising if a similar resolution were not introduced in the U.S.Congress; (3) We are going to see a number of commentators and experts in the U.S. move to support these resolutions in the U.S. media; and, (4) These European Parliament resolutions are going to lead to more international support for Taiwan as well as clarity in that support. #OneChinaPolicy #OneChinaPolicy #Taiwan #PRC #europeanparliament

If China was considering retaking Taiwan by force, it is hard to see how this doesn't encourage that. I'm not making a political statement nor advocating actions by either Europe or China, but as I detailed in "May you live in interesting times, The Wheel of Fortune" (link below), there is a good case to be made that incentives were already aligning for China to make a move on Taiwan later this year. The combination of (1) Taiwanese people increasingly seeing themselves as culturally distinct from China; (2) Taiwan electing the independence minded DPP to a third consecutive term; and now (3) a major political entity/supranational bucking the trend of declining diplomatic recognition for Taiwan all point to a diminishing likelihood of peaceful unification, which was always the fig leaf covering China's "One China" rhetoric. Given that demographic, economic and military-technology trends all likely work against China in the longer run, these increase the pressure on the CCP and President Xi in particular to "do something" about what the former sees as an existential threat and the latter sees as his legacy. https://lnkd.in/efUep-mD #China #Taiwan #Geopolitics

The One China Policy, which recognizes the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China, has been a cornerstone of US-China relations for decades. However, recent tensions between the two nations have raised questions about the sustainability of this policy. In light of these developments, the US could potentially use soft power combined with ASEAN integration to deplete the One China Policy. One way the US could do this is by promoting democratic values and human rights. China's authoritarian government is often criticized for its human rights record, and promoting democratic values could help to undermine the legitimacy of the One China Policy. The US could also promote cultural exchange programs, such as educational exchanges and cultural events, to build relationships with people in the region and promote alternative perspectives. Another way the US could deplete the One China Policy is by leveraging ASEAN integration. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organization that promotes economic, political, and security cooperation among its ten member states. ASEAN has become an increasingly important player in the region, and the US could use its relationship with ASEAN to advance its interests. One way the US could use ASEAN integration to deplete the One China Policy is by promoting economic cooperation. The US could work with ASEAN to promote trade and investment in the region, which could help to reduce the region's dependence on China. This could also help to promote economic growth and development in the region, which could lead to greater political stability and security. The US could also use ASEAN integration to promote regional security cooperation. The US has a strong military presence in the region, and it could work with ASEAN to promote greater security cooperation among its member states. This could help to counter China's growing military influence in the region and promote regional stability. In conclusion, the US could potentially use soft power combined with ASEAN integration to deplete the One China Policy. By promoting alternative narratives and values, as well as promoting economic and security cooperation in the region, the US could work to undermine the legitimacy of the One China Policy and promote its own interests in the region. While this would be a challenging task, it could ultimately lead to a more stable and prosperous region.
