Happy Juneteenth! ✊🏾 A special day to celebrate freedom and the journey towards equality. Despite gentrification, this area remains vibrant with Black history and community, home to many Black-owned businesses you can support locally and throughout Denver. At Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, we are dedicated to advocating for racial justice and building an equitable world for our girls and community. We believe that girls and their communities have the right to live free from systemic inequities and institutionalized oppressions. Today, we not only celebrate freedom but also honor Black joy and the resilience of the Black community. 🖤💚💛❤️ Ways to honor Juneteenth: 🌟Learn about historical neighborhoods in Denver such as Five Points, and Black history in the U.S. 🌟 Black-owned businesses, shopbipoc.com is a great resource! 🌟 Support Black creators: Read books by Black authors and watch films by Black creators. 🌟Get involved with organizations that support racial justice.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day of liberation and reflection. On June 19, 1865, over 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Texas finally learned they were free—more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. While Juneteenth marks the end of slavery, it's important that we remember and acknowledge that the journey to freedom was long, and the fight for equality and equity continues today. A more equitable and equal society is possible through our combined efforts. By educating yourself and sharing what you learn, advocating for change, engaging with local organizations focused on social justice and helping amplify those voices. Engage with organization like the Running Industry Diversity Coalition, who are actively dismantling barriers and expanding black-ownership in the running industry. What are some other organizations that deserve our attention for their work in creating a more equitable world?

"Juneteenth a hallmark of racial progress -- and at the same time, it epitomizes progress delayed and denied. "-Marie Beecham As we celebrate today, we should also be looking ahead to ensure we are uplifting the voices who aren't usually heard. As Marie mentioned in her post, "Juneteenth teaches us something about victory and struggle; finished work and unfinished work'; triumphs and trials... we celebrate every step of progress that's made along the way." - uhm mic drop?! 🎤 This can be said for a lot of our work in Canada as well. Let's keep moving forward together, not forgetting the past, but rather using the past to fuel our fire for supporting better experiences for all people. If your organization needs support on moving in the right direction and how to get the conversations started- Hays x FAIRER Consulting (a hays company) are here to support you and your employees on this journey. And remember, LISTENING is your best tool- use it and use it well! 👂 #juneteenth #dei

There’s a few more days left for Black History Month. I’ve been thinking a lot this month about how the rights of the Asian community in the US (which I am a part of) was built on the backs of Black civil rights leaders. Fellow Asian community members, we need to step up our game when it comes to amplifying other marginalized community members. Racism is part of our lived experience, so we understand it, but we also have access to spaces that other marginalized folks don’t. We have the power and privilege – let’s use it wisely. We don’t use it nearly enough. We owe it to Black leaders who paved the way for our own rights to confront anti-Blackness in our own communities and show up for Black folks when it comes to pushing back against systemic racism. And the thing is we’re stronger when we fight against oppressive systems together. Saamiya Seraj, Ph.D and I are hosting a workshop on this topic tomorrow in collaboration with Asian Family Support Services of Austin. It’s free! Come join us if you want to learn about how to be in solidarity with Black folks and uproot Anti-Blackness in your communities. Link to the workshop in the comments.

As we observe Black History Month, it's essential to address a stark reality for this community: Approximately 53% of Black children in the U.S. are likely to encounter a CPS investigation by the age of 18, a rate nearly double that for White children. This statistic is a sobering reminder of the inequalities faced by Black families. At PCA America, we embrace and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of African Americans, particularly in the arts, as highlighted in this year's theme. However, we also recognize the urgent need for equitable treatment and support for all families. This month, let's commit to creating a world where every child, irrespective of their background, has the opportunity to thrive. #BlackHistoryMonth2024 #ArtForChange #EquityForAll
