Last month, we went back to the 70’s and 80’s to the very roots of modern day Sercon, today, we’re moving on to the 90’s and early noughties. In 1990 Europa Scientific, forerunners of Sercon, were awarded their first Queen’s Award For Export Excellence and moved into dedicated premises, Europa House, in Crewe, UK. A second generation of bench top CF-IRMS systems, the 2020 IRMS and ANCA elemental analyser, was introduced and soon expanded with GC-IRMS (ORCHID) and traditional Dual inlet-IRMS (GEO) options. Europa had recognised the potential of the 13C labelled Urea Breath Test for the detection of Helicobacter Pylori infection that leads to stomach ulcers. This was based on the work by Nobel prize winning researcher Barry Marshal in Australia and Peter Klein in the USA. An instrument dedicated to analysing this revolutionary non-invasive test for ulcers was brought to market as the ABCA. It was soon regarded as the ‘gold standard’ for the test and found worldwide in hospitals and research centres. Growing demand for a cost effective simple 15N & 13C isotope analyser for solid samples by combustion was met by designing the world’s first and only single box combined EA and IRMS, the INTEGRA. This proved to be a popular product and being easily transportable soon found itself in remote locations on land and sea. Another Queen’s Award For Export Excellence was earned by 1998. But these were difficult times, resulting in the sale of Europa Scientific to the PDZ group of companies who ran it for several years. Not everyone was happy with the situation, and in 2001, Sercon was born when two key players, Chris Pullan and Steve Welsh left to setup a service and consumables supply company to meet a need PDZ wasn’t fulfilling. Mark O’Connor and Sam Barker soon joined Chris and Steve and the company prospered thanks to its friendly and approachable relationship with researchers and analysts, and when the PDZ group collapsed in 2004, Sercon stepped in and bought the rights to the Europa product line ensuring its continuing availability. That was nearly 20 years ago, and Sercon has never stood on its laurels – we’ll bring Sercon’s story right up to date next month! #irms #queensawardforexportexcellence Jean-Yves HENRY, Frank Dörries, Eric Mossel, Leonardo Alvarez, Christopher Goh, Revia Chen, MUHAMMAD Baseer Anwar, Tacettin Öztürk, Ahmed Moustafa June Yoo J. Reflecting on a Pivotal Moment at ASRM 2023 A couple of months have passed since the ASRM 2023 conference in New Orleans, and the insights gained there continue to resonate, particularly regarding the advancements at REPROLIFE, the team I returned to. 🔍 Focused Evolution in Vitrification and Thawing Protocols: REPROLIFE's commitment to innovation is evident in the significant enhancements made to the vitrification and thawing protocols. These refinements have made the procedures not only more straightforward and secure but also remarkably efficient in preventing errors and mishaps. 🧪 Improved Solutions for Safer Embryo Care: Our solutions have been meticulously refined, achieving an optimal viscosity while reducing potentially harmful components. This advancement underscores our dedication to providing the safest possible environment for embryo development. ⏲ Streamlined Processes for Enhanced Efficiency: In our field, where time and precision are critical, REPROLIFE has successfully reduced process durations. This streamlining allows embryologists to maintain high survival rates while benefiting from increased efficiency. 🏅 Certifications : As REPROLIFE approaches FDA and CE certification, this marks a significant affirmation of our commitment to quality and regulatory compliance. As we look ahead, it's clear that REPROLIFE isn't just adapting to changes in our field – it's actively shaping the future of embryology. I hope we all continue to embrace these advancements together. #Embryology #IVFLabs #REPROLIFE #Innovation #ASRM2023 #REPROLIFE #vitrification #cryopreservation https://lnkd.in/g7QPSzka

The recent newborn screening edition of Rare Revolution Magazine, co-sponsored by Travere Therapeutics, highlighted two new pilot programs focused on the use of genomic testing at birth for hundreds of rare conditions. Using this type of genomic testing can potentially help healthcare professionals intervene at the earliest stages, before babies become critically ill. The ‘BeginNGSTM to end the diagnostic journey program,’ headed by Dr. Stephen Kingsmore, president, and CEO of the Rady Children's Institute for Genomic Medicine and the ‘Early Check’ program, run by Dr. Holly Peay at RTI International, North Carolina, are shifting the paradigm of newborn screening by offering no-cost genetic sequencing that at least three times as many rare conditions. As a biotechnology company committed to earlier diagnosis in rare disease, Travere Therapeutics has been a supporter of these pilot programs since they began. Every child deserves the best start in life, and these voluntary genomic testing programs can help us understand how newborn screening could evolve. Congratulations to CREOL postdoctoral researcher Stephanos Yerolatsitis who lead a group that qualified to present at the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. During the #Sciathon (a hackathon-style competition this year focused on innovations in medicine) nearly 30 groups of young scientists from around the world were asked to develop a project based on the group leader’s idea. Up to ten participants worked together virtually for just 48 hours to submit a five-page paper and a short video (linked below). Five groups were chosen to present at the Lindau Meetings. In an audience vote after the presentations, Stephanos’s group was chosen as one of two winners! The title of their presentation: Revolutionizing Cancer Detection with Optical Fibers and AI. See the comments below for a link to an interview with Dr. Yerolatsitis and his team. #congratulations #lino23 #opticalfiber #ai #medicine #cancer #optics #photonics #light #bright #education #research #CREOL #UCFCREOL #UCF David Hagan
