Designer/Consultant at Squarepeg Design, designing for Neuroinclusion BA (Hons) Interior Design, Associate - British Institute of Interior Design, Member Access Association, Member Sign Design Society
Everyday is a school day, though for the first time it was me delivering the lesson. My passion and belief in developing Neuroinclusive Design ignited the mind of a lovely lady who reached out to me for guidance. Through coaching I can extend the specialist knowledge to other designers who also believe that spaces need to be inclusive. My vision is Neuroinclusive Design will feature heavily within the future planning of our built environment. As designers we have a social and environmental responsibility to ensure our spaces are aligned to the scientific research of the human mind. More designers/architects/planners etc need to be adopting neuroinclusion to future or existing schemes. Www.squarepegdesign.net #neuroinclusivedesign #inclusivedesign

Design communities are the cradle of creativity. What if they could be more? Let's delve into an unconventional perspective, exploring the uncharted territories of design communities. Imagine a space where every hue of creativity has the freedom to blend and contrast, to form a masterpiece that speaks volumes. Design communities are not just about sharing ideas, they are about challenging the norms, breaking the boundaries and setting new trends They can be the incubators for groundbreaking design approaches that can revolutionize our world. But there's a dimension often overlooked - embracing the mistakes. The unpolished, raw, and authentic missteps that lead to extraordinary evolution. Imagine a design community that doesn't just celebrate success, but also the journey of trial and error, the courage to experiment, and the resilience in the face of failure. A community where every step back is considered a leap forward, where every 'failed' design is seen as a stepping stone to innovation. Let's envision a future where design communities are not just about perfection and aesthetics, but about the messy and beautiful process of creation. #communities #collaborationspaces #share #design #recruitment #safespace

An important conversation on the design industry. Here are a few of my own thoughts: Quality Design is growing so rapidly that quality cannot be guaranteed. Anyone these days can download Canva, use a template and call themselves a designer. Originality is lacking for many brands. Diversity Over 70% of designers are white in the US. In order for the industry to have a more inclusive perspective, agencies need to work to hire more minorities. But the truth is, many minority groups lack access to the tools, programs and education needed to jump into this profession. Unrealistic Expectations It’s important for designers to expand their skillset, but some agencies list a job posting with so many requirements that it’s impossible for one person to excel at every requirement. A designer that is a jack-of-all-trades often leads to underperformance.

Oh boy, slide 2/5 hits home. 😅 As a Designer with a background in Marketing, I've been fortunate enough to lead and be on both Creative and Marketing teams, so I can attest our work is sometimes undervalued. Although we bring both creative and intellectual value to a project, our contributions are often overshadowed by marketing priorities. We are often given unrealistic timelines that do not take into account the time-consuming nature of the design. Hence why non-designers turn to Canva for "quick" branding and marketing graphics... 😬 Correcting the misconception is not an easy fix I understand but, it comes down to ensuring constant and effective communication between the two teams, support from management, and trust in the subject-matter experts from decision-makers. 🤝 ❤️ I continue to have hope. 🤞 #DesignersAreSOValuable #GraphicDesigner #Marketer

I think we live in a world now where "good enough" tends to be more important than "good." There is a much higher value placed on speed of service, and quantity of items rather than quality of design. Because of that, actual creativity seems to often be left out of the conversation when it comes to the design process. Our whole profession is being devalued because of this and folks who don't realize that good design isn't just filling in a template. But there's an opportunity here to advocate for yourself and your livelihood. Develop a workflow that meets people in the middle. Learn to work smarter and you'll create faster. It's all we can do with the hand we're dealt.

Big thanks to Distributed Design for sharing this! If you want to get involved in the project, check out the post below 👇
💡 Take a look at "Design for Collective Spaces", a project developed by Marielle Sam-Wall, a Distributed Design Mentor! 💭 Marielle defines it as a "design approach that helps people in creating projects that care. Care about our planet, its people, and the joy that comes with working collectively towards a more equitable future." ⭐️ Recently Marielle took part in the Distributed Design's Impact Cohort programme, where they were inspired to revisit and refresh their project openly, taking a collaborative approach to redefine its values. 🔗 Read more about DCS here: https://lnkd.in/drpapVYq 🤝 And get in touch with Marielle Sam-Wall to further improve and contribute to the project! #CreativeEurope #DistributedDesign #ImapctCohortProgramme #CreativeTalent

Digital Product Designer | UX/UI, Motion, Interaction, and Graphic Designer | Well-being and Inclusivity
Design is underrated. The work of trained designers, which carries both creative and intellectual value, often gets overshadowed by marketing priorities. Not to mention the unrealistic timelines planned with a lack of awareness of design processes. This is why non-designers use Canva for branding or marketing graphics. As a designer, I wish our value receives more recognition and respect.
