Great topic David. My town (Dublin, OH) has been constructing roundabouts for the past 15 years. With only one exception, accident severity has dropped very significantly for each of those intersections. The exception was the roundabout built at State Route 161/Bridge Street and Dublin Road. When opened, this roundabout had a design flaw that actually increased accident frequency and severity. The City of Dublin quickly addressed the issue with a revision to the overall design. Since then, the roundabout has produced the same positive effects outlined in your article. The initial study and design project is key in making sure the roundabout works well for the given intersection.
