From fundamental research to medical applications Last week, Alessandro Raimondo, CERN knowledge transfer officer, chaired the « digital innovation » panel at the BioTechX congress in Basel, Switzerland. As part of its activities, CERN is tackling the challenges of collection, storage and processing of ever-larger data sets, an expertise which benefits the medical field. Simulation codes, developed for physics, have become vital when modelling the effects of radiation on living tissues, for instance. More recently, TRUSTroke, an upcoming #horizoneurope project to which CERN participates, aims to use CERN-born federated learning platforms to detect brain pathologies such as strokes. Take part in the long story of CERN's impact on #medtech. Since the 1970s, CERN has pursued medical applications of the technologies stemming from its particle physics research. At that time, knowledge transfer happened – mostly serendipitously – through the initiative of individual researchers, such as Georges Charpak, a detector physicist who invented the #nobelprize-winning particle detector at CERN in 1968. This novel technology had the ability to record millions of particle tracks per second, opening a new era for particle physics but also for #medicalimaging, where its sensitivity promised to reduce radiation doses during #radiology procedures. CERN continues to make consistent efforts to maximise the impact of the laboratory’s know-how and technologies on the medical sector. Our technologies and know-how reach the market thanks to partners with an #openinnovation mindset. From established companies to fast-growing startups, you can access our portfolio to innovate your business.
