I would like to advertise a postdoc position available at the INFN in Milano-Bicocca by Dr. Elena Ferri. The activity is within the high relevance national project B-NGO which I coordinate. Here below some information. The deadline is very close (January 13th 2024), so please get in contact with her for any information (elena.ferri@mib.infn.it). https://lnkd.in/dS6Ye7By N. Bando: 26255 Title: Characterisation of innovative materials with superconducting microwave resonators Activity: The performance of superconducting circuits in the realm of quantum computing is fundamentally intertwined with the losses incurred within the materials used. More specifically, the coherence times are typically constrained by losses attributed to two-level systems (TLS). Identifying dielectric materials, superconducting films and fabrication techniques that minimize losses is critical in establishing scalable architectures for superconducting quantum computing. Superconducting microwave microresonators provide a powerful tool for probing TLS losses and other mechanisms relevant to superconducting circuits (i.e non-equilibrium quasiparticles and magnetic flux vortices). The activity will be focused on the design, production and characterization of superconducting microwave microresonators to quantify losses in materials. #hiring #jobopportunity #research #postdoc #superconducting #resonators #quantumcomputing

Silicon vacancy centers are promising for #quantum sensors and quantum communication networks. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gSsWUaaH A group led by Jennifer Dionne at Stanford University recently tested silicon vacancy centers in diamond nanoparticles, tiny pieces of diamond that are a few hundred nanometers across. Typically, several vacancies are scattered throughout the sample like holes in a sponge. The signal from a vacancy center takes the form of a photon. In a perfect world, a vacancy-in-diamond acts as a trusty photon factory, reliably producing the same photon type every time one comes off the assembly line — same color, same brightness. 🔷 🔷 🔷 🔷 🔷 But scientists had been seeing a variety of photon colors and brightnesses shooting from their diamond sources. 🔷 🔸 🔻 🟩 🟡. That led the Dionne group to dig deeper. The team examined the domains one by one, measuring the photon emission from each. And they began to notice a pattern: The photon profile differed from one domain of diamond to the next. The grain of each domain shapes the vacancy inside it, stretching or squeezing it. While a vacancy in one domain might be squeezed one way, the vacancy next door might be strained differently. The group found that the way the vacancy is strained affects the emitted photon’s properties, as does its location within the grain structure. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gSsWUaaH #quantumcommunication #quantumsensing #quantummaterials #quantumscience #quantumengineering
