Another insightful session from the #MuseumXRSummit covering AR technologies: The "Stripping Away the Layers of the Lancaster Bomber" panel with Karen Worden of The Royal Air Force Museum and Dan Betts of Spark Emerging Technologies Limited shared how the RAF Museum implemented a fascinating AR solution to allow visitors to explore and interact with unseen parts of the Lancaster Bomber aircraft. Key highlights: · Engagement value and human connections. Each aircraft in the museum has its own story, and AR helps keep these stories fresh and engaging for new generations, especially as visitors’ connections to family members who served in the RAF are fading with time · Historical Accuracy: AR allows the museum to augment real objects with historical features, such as different color schemes or engines used in previous versions of the aircraft, transporting visitors back in time and bringing the unseen to life · Unrestricted Access: AR provides a way for visitors to explore the interior of the aircraft, which is otherwise impossible due to preservation needs · Flexible and Scalable Solution: The platform allows content to be easily amended, updated, and expanded, ensuring long-term sustainability and adaptability Project insights: · The team provided visitors with two ways to access the AR aircraft: a screen-based in-gallery experience and a "bring your own device" mobile AR experience · The in-gallery experience was self-sufficient, with accessible physical kiosks that could be calibrated for AR content · The mobile AR experience was purely web-based, requiring no downloads, and compatible with any device · The team ensured AR cut-outs of objects were accurate and sought an open-source solution to avoid software dependencies and licensing fees · The project's digital offerings were designed for durability, making them easily repairable and accessible to as many people as possible for the longest time · Project challenges included ensuring a seamless mobile AR experience across many devices, capturing 3D models under challenging conditions with poor lighting and tight spaces, and maintaining AR content accuracy Final Product & Outcomes: · An interactive, screen-based AR journey inside the Lancaster Bomber, bringing its interior to life · Ability to explore the aircraft from different positions and learn about the aircrew's roles and the environment they operated in · Authentic audio recordings using the voices of the crewmen themselves · Capability to update and manage content going forward via a CMS #MuseumNext #MuseumXRSummit #VR #AR

“Every driver has probably experienced mind-wandering. What is little known, however, is that mind-wandering is one of the leading causes of fatal car accidents.“ – Dr. Andrew Reid Reid and his fellow researchers Myrthe Faber & Phill Brown want to create an ecologically valid VR environment to study when, why, and how the mind wanders while driving, and how it can be detected and potentially prevented. The team will make use of the lab facilities at MindLabs. “We partnered with Veilig Verkeer Nederland to connect what we’re simulating in our virtual reality environment with what’s actually happening on the highway.” The project is funded by Tilburg University’s Digital Sciences for Society program. Through this program, Tilburg University invests in impactful research, education and collaboration aimed at seizing the opportunities and dealing with the challenges of digitalization for science and society. What happens when immersive tech and artificial intelligence converge? ✨ Looking forward to exploring this question with the focus on spatial planning during the panel at "Erlebnis Raumplanung" in #Basel this Thursday. First thoughts: 1️⃣ While #AI will simplify content creation and the availability of custom information, #XR will change the way we interact with digital content. Bringing these trends together will unlock new productivity and creativity use cases in our immediate sight. 2️⃣ "Seeing the invisible" has been possible with XR solutions for a while and is nothing new. But, to adjust your surrounding AI-empowered enables rapid visual #prototyping. 3️⃣ No tablet will be needed for visualization. To display 3D objects, XR technologies enable a higher level of immersion and keep your #handsfree for any other productivity task. How would you leverage the power of AI in your vision? Thank you for the invitation iart - studio for media architectures and Standortförderung Baselland. See you in Basel - link to the event and ticket page is in the comments. Philip E. "Mimesis" is a term originating from ancient Greek philosophy and aesthetics, particularly discussed by Plato and Aristotle. It refers to the act of imitation or representation of the real world in art, literature, or other forms of cultural expression. With the rise of XR Technologies, Mimesis expands to include the creation of immersive digital environments and experiences, empowering creators to craft interactive simulations and virtual worlds that provide users with unparalleled levels of immersion and engagement. This also prompts questions about authenticity, representation, and the impact of simulated experiences on individuals and society. As technology evolves, so does our understanding of Mimesis in the context of XR, shaping how we perceive and interact with the world around us. At Mimezis Studio, we firmly believe in harnessing the power of representation to strengthen and fortify our reality, offering users transformative encounters that deepen their connection to the world. #xr #mimesis #digitalart #mimezisstudio #digitalnarratives
