Sophia is one of 65 school girls that visited our institute at this year’s Girls'Day - Mädchen-Zukunftstag. She took part in our workshop „AI WORLD: Doing homework with ChatGPT?“ organized by Prof. Wojciech Samek & Dr. Sebastian Lapuschkin’s research group „Explainable Artificial Intelligence“ (#XAI). The participants trained an AI, got to know various AI tools, discovered some of the limits of current AI, and got insights into one of our core research quests: How AI can be explained. Watch Sophia’s testimony on how the day inspired her and how she even came to hold a small presentation for Federal Minister for Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dcyXxpqK Thank you to the Girls’Day crew, the minister and her team and of course all our colleagues who dedicated their energy and time to make this Girls’Day a success. We are already looking forward to Girls’Day 2025! #WomeninSTEM #GirlsDay

Learn more about Ai Weiwei in this article from the East Bay Express. "Often, people perceive that I am seeking a certain form of interaction. There is a Chinese proverb that states, 'When the tree desires calm, the wind does not cease.' When we observe the swaying tip of a tree, it is not the tip of the tree in motion, but rather the wind that is causing the movement. In Zen philosophy, there is a saying that neither the trees nor the wind are truly in motion; instead, it is our minds that are in motion." https://lnkd.in/gcqqC4hV

CEO of AIandYou | AI literacy for marginalized communities, policymakers, NAIAC, NIST AI Safety, AI keynote speaker.
I met Timnit Gebru roughly 5 years ago in Montreal at NeurIPS, the largest global gathering for AI leaders. I was hired by NeurIPS to "handle" the new diversity issues at the conference, including one Black female engineer, Gebru. Timnit's diversity efforts were to increase the participation of Black engineers at the conference. She was feverishly working on getting Black AI engineers visas for the conference. Somehow, that was seen as disruptive behavior. Within 5 minutes of meeting Timnit, it was clear to me that her intent was representation. She was not a problem. She was a problem for NeurIPS. We became fast friends, and she guided me as I launched #aiandyou. Timnit has had her foot on the pedal for years around representation and algorithmic risk. Nobody wanted to hear the truth. Fast forward to today, and many are heralding responsible AI as something new. White men and tech companies make the cover saying the same thing she did years ago. To my friend, Timnit, I applaud your strength, courage, and tenacity! "How would that risk have changed if we’d listened to Gebru? What if we had heard the voices of the women like her who’ve been waving the flag about AI and machine learning? Researchers — including many women of color — have been saying for years that these systems interact differently with people of color and that the societal effects could be disastrous..." #inclusionmatters #aibias #diveristyandinclusion #responsibleai https://lnkd.in/g3c7FbZh

Are you interested in breaking up the boys club of tech and AI? Will you be at Legal Week and free on Wednesday, 1/31 at 5pE? If so, then meet me, CAT CASEY and Ashley Picker Dubin at the Warwick Hotel bar for a meet up to talk about the networking/collab group we're forming: AI Baddies The goal of this group is to be a safe space to encourage each other to get out there and be the change you want in AI. Does it both you that not enough women being represented in the broader discussions and leadership roles about AI and emerging tech? Well let's do something about it 👏 The AI Baddies community will be built up here on LinkedIn through a private group (link in the comments), so even if you can't make it to LWNY it doesn't mean you can't get involved. AI Baddies don't gatekeep and we want to create avenues of support for people working hard in the trenches, new to the profession, introverted, or might not have the means for conference travel. We are still in early days of formation, but we are ready to get this ball rolling forward. So, wanna be a baddie? Join us at the Warwick on Wednesday and definitely join us in the AI Baddies group: https://lnkd.in/g2DiJUhK #womenintech #womeninai #aibaddies

If you still haven't watched this interview, you are not serious about life. (I am joking🤣 , but yes - please, it's a must-watch). I've been thinking a lot about the significant gaps that young #Africans face in their quest for equal opportunities. With a median age of about 19.7 years in 2021, Africa is the youngest #continent globally. These thoughts are closely tied to the role of #technology, which can either empower or hinder progress. The latest developments in the #FourthIndustrialRevolution have the potential to be a potent catalyst for Africa's advancement, but they could also pose formidable obstacles. Swiftly bridging these #disparities is crucial, ensuring #inclusivity and #accessibility. Otherwise, we risk exacerbating existing #inequalities. I was genuinely delighted to see two distinguished African luminaries (https://lnkd.in/d2zqyzKP) whose insights I deeply respect affirming the two messages I shared on this #platform a week ago, the first one titled "Unpopular Opinion: Rethinking Education in Africa." You can find the post here: https://lnkd.in/dUrsMscy In that same week, I also watched and reshared an interview I did with SABC News a year ago, where I expounded upon pragmatic strategies for harnessing our limited resources, such as #technology and #mobiledevices, to catalyze #innovation and elevate the #entrepreneurial landscape for young Africans, especially those in underserved regions. Here's the link to that interview: https://lnkd.in/dE6bKm2X Strive Masiyiwa I want to express my deep appreciation for the insights you shared during the interview. I particularly liked your emphasis on how Africa could miss out on opportunities because our #educationsystem isn't aligned with the possibilities offered by AI (thus echoing my sentiments). Your call for the right investments to leverage AI and improve education gives hope that African youth can compete on a global scale. Thank you for the work you continue to do for this continent. James Manyika and Google, thank you for this enlightening and affirmative conversation. As someone working diligently to empower African women and youth in my own (little) way, this 24-minute dialogue not only validates my efforts but also inspires me to work even harder. The two articles below, from the New York Times and the Guardian, address one of the more sociologically-important aspects of the current development of A.I., which gets less attention than it should - namely the broader consequences of the dominant tendency for A.I. voices not just to be female, but of a woman who is cheery and just lives to help. There are good questions to be asked, and important discussions to be had, about the degree to which this just helps concretise and re-affirm traditional images of the "supportive woman" ("behind every great man stands a great woman", etc.). It's complex, because for those of us who have grown up with that traditional image, it can indeed just feel more comfortable interacting with a female voice than a male one (full disclosure: when given the option, I do indeed always choose a female voice when interacting with tech). But in a world in which there are still different expectations of "good female behaviour" and "good male behaviour" (men are "forceful", women are "pushy", etc.) it can't be a good thing to have us all further subconsciously acclimatised to the feeling that women are indeed thrilled just to have the chance to be of service. https://lnkd.in/eF3aUBZ6 https://lnkd.in/ekyz-2kE
