We had a blast at The Long Night of Science! It was a pleasure to open our doors & laboratories to show visitors our latest innovations in #ICT. We brought out some of our most cutting-edge topics: #TerahertzTechnologies, InP-based photonic-integrated circuits (PICs), fiber optic communication and #QuantumEncryption. As well as #6G, volumetric video streaming & our latest #ExplainableAI research. And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the six demos our video & imaging technologies team prepared to show the various application fields of their technologies: From agriculture to construction, medicine, culture of remembrance and citizen science. Thank you to all visitors – we could not have asked for a more interested audience. And a very big shout out to all our colleagues who made this day possible – especially our showroom team Marc Reznicek, Patty Riedlinger (Fechtler) & their colleagues! This year we had the delight of hosting BIFOLD - Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data in our Science Tech Space @ HHI. Kudos to the team for the great collaboration. Hidalgo (Public Affairs Lead at France Digitale), Frederic Pascal (Director of the Institut DATAIA Paris-Saclay) and Denis B. (co-founder and CEO of Finegrain) about Generative #AI "New uses and New Frontiers". 🔎 They tackled the following topics: - the impact on business - issues of sovereignty and technological independence for France - our strengths in education, research and infrastructure #SiPearl is building the European high-performance low-power microprocessor dedicated to #supercomputing and #AI inference. This new generation of #microprocessors will first target EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) ecosystem, which is deploying world-class supercomputing infrastructures in Europe for solving major challenges in medical research, security, energy management and climate with a reduced environmental footprint. At the Gerd Herziger Session as part of the congress, top managers from the photonics industry discussed how digitalization and AI will influence business models and value creation in laser technology. The panel discussion, chaired by Prof. Dr. Constantin Haefner, Director of the Fraunhofer ILT in Aachen, featured Dr. Hagen Zimer, Board Member and CEO of Laser Technology at TRUMPF SE + Co. KG in Ditzingen, Dr. Christoph Rüttimann, CTO of Bystronic Group in Niederönz (CH) and Dr. Christopher Dorman OBE, the Executive Vice President of the COHERENT Lasers Business based in Glasgow. They discussed about their companies‘ and the industry’s readiness for cyberphotonics as well as the rapidly impact of AI on their processes, products and organisations. 🧑💼 💬 In view of the huge potential and disruptive nature of cyberphotonics, they advised photonics companies to act quickly and decisively. Digital platforms with value-added services for users could be created around globally networked laser systems. In the medium term, AI, machine learning and digital twins could make it possible to establish self-learning laser systems as well as first-time-right (FTR) production.
