Hey Iceland — Why are you still pushing tourism??? Let’s pump the breaks on the development. #overtourism is still real. Quality travelers over quantity. And no destination should be too dependent on tourism. Most importantly, not all local Icelanders are happy with booming tourism growth. Because local quality of life should be a top priority in this new travel era. Your tourism industry must be 100% committed to #sustainability #stewardship. 👊🇮🇸 ~ Rob 400,000 Icelanders are struggling with the challenges of living in a country predominately oriented around tourism. And many of you know the key historical moments that put Iceland on the travel map: > 2009: The dramatic economic meltdown led to $100 billion in banking losses and the collapse of the currency. The once-prohibitively expensive island was now affordable to visitors. > 2010: The Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, releasing a vast plume of ash that grounded air traffic across Europe for weeks — and put Iceland in the center of global news. Then the tourism boom erupted in Iceland. I was in Iceland back in 2016 and the Reykjavik Airport was like a massive cattle corral — endless numbers of travelers jam packed in the airport terminal, and no one was sure which checkin line they were in to catch their flight out! 🐮 Local challenges continue: Overdevelopment — As overtourism continues, developers are moving away from high-traffic areas and into remote regions like the Icelandic highlands — the largest stretch of European wilderness that has never been inhabited or cultivated. #conservation Housing — For example, its supply of long-term housing is dwindling. Therefore, locals struggle to find affordable housing in a market that’s been flooded with short term rentals (Airbnb, VRBO, etc). And at least half of all apartments in some centrally located districts are tourist rentals. #shorttermrentals Bloomberg News Katrin Jakobsdottir Ragnhildur Sigurdardottir Tourism Iceland #iceland #destinationmanagement Iceland Tourism Cluster Ólöf Ýrr Atladóttir

Award-Winning Writer, Public Speaker, Consultant | Solutions Advocate | I help tourism professionals decolonize travel experiences and support sustainability using ethical marketing and strategic storytelling.
We know that narratives we reinforce in tourism can harm people, but this is a great example of how they can harm places as well. "For centuries, pirates, whalers, and explorers—and now scientists and conservationists— have presented the Galápagos as fixed in time, a kind of Pompeii for naturalists." I have visited the Galápagos, and this is the story I was told too. Yet, as noted in this Atlantic article, "change is constant." Invasive plants and animals threaten the ecosystem, and the overabundance of travelers is leading to degradation. When Galápagos National Park was founded in 1959, it was recommended the annual limit of tourists be capped at 12,000 people. Are we surprised that almost 270,000 arrived in 2022 to "drink pink gin, eat sushi, and footle around in I Love Boobies T-shirts?" Let's be more transparent about what's happening in destinations around the world. Selling a idyllic tale that cherry picks the pretty bits only threatens to cause more harm. https://lnkd.in/ds44mMiA

As the world faces multiple crises, ecotourism is emerging as a way to respond. Today, on World Wetland Day, take a moment to learn about the vital ecosystem and the benefits it provides. Wetlands are great examples of nature-based solutions and ecosystem services. By traveling in nature, we can build compassion for all living beings and embrace the age-old Buddhist philosophy - the mindfulness and sustainability. Ecotourism demonstrates how spirituality and scientific theory merge. Check out this recent blog on the wise use of wetlands for more information. #naturebasedsolutions #sustainability #ecosystemservices #ecosystemrestoration #wetlands #worldwetlandday #ramsarconvention #mindfulness #deepecology #sdg

The Nature of Tourism... Tourism and nature, tourism and economy, tourism and cities Living part of the time in Barcelona has brought me in contact with a perplexing situation. Some parts of the city are overrun by tourists who are changing not only the customs, the economy, but the city itself, and places I used to love to visit. It's not really the visitors' fault, but the evidence is seen in the crowded places, the loud (often American) tourists, the trash, the lack of service in some establishments, the rise of Airbnb, and many more effects. What's a city to do? Some talk about "managing" the flow of tourists and guiding them to places throughout the area. I doubt this is realistic. First, we need real facts, such as: How much does tourism contribute to the economic health of a place and how much does it cost - short and medium term? How many Airbnb units are there? Who really benefits from these? Where do tourists get their information? Can we modify the source and messages? It would seem that a multi-pronged strategic effort is needed, once a goal for the sector has been established and consensus with the many agents in this sector has been initiated. It would also seem that we need to rethink the whole concept of tourism. Today, it seems that crowds of consumers, with cell phones in hand, invade the most famous places and snap, snap, snap photos, and just as quickly as they arrive, they depart as we wait for the next wave. To inspire new types of behavior, how about the "carrot and the stick" approach? High taxes for "extractive" tourists who swoop in go only to the most famous places, and depart, leaving nothing but their waste behind. Those who do not want to pay the high taxes could stay longer, contribute to a community through volunteer service, sharing experience, or getting to know something about local culture and customs by taking classes. Can we encourage a different type of tourism geared to those most likely to stay longer and contribute to the place? Can tourists become "residents" (even for a short period) participating more broadly in activities, governance, and daily life? More and more people will be travelling in the future. It's not a matter of "scaling up" the present situation. Rather, a change in definitions, concepts, and criteria is needed. #cities #tourism #Barcelona #wastemanagement #urbanplanning #travel
