“Time spent on recce is seldom wasted” (Duke of Wellington, General Erwin Rommel)… “The map is not the territory” (Alfred Korzybski)… So true today... When we plan a new route for a client’s walkshop or for one of our free monthly Fresh Air Business Walks, the process goes something like this: 🔸 A “map recce” to scope some candidate routes 🔹 Check for pre-exiting routes on sites like Walk Highlands 🔸 Check regional council, Visit Scotland, Scottish National Trust etc. sites for information 🔹 Find someone local in our networks to get some local knowledge 🔸 Conduct an in-person recce to prove the route, identify any access issues and hazards, and check that the start/finish venue serves good brews and butties, and has decent toilets! So, today… We headed off to North Ayrshire with 3 candidate routes in mind for the free Fresh Air Business Walk on Fri 13 Oct 23, met up with the very excellent Largs-based Gordon MacKellar of global manufacturing design specialists Prime Design who provided some great pointers, and then walked and biked the route to discover sections we can’t use due to the tracks on the map having been completely overgrown and infested with ticks! Some data from National Association of Manufacturing: 1. For every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, there is a total impact of $2.60 to the overall American economy. 2. The majority of manufacturing firms in the United States are quite small, like Dunmore. In 2020, there were 239,524 firms in the manufacturing sector, with all but 4,024 firms considered to be small (i.e., having fewer than 500 employees). 3. Manufacturers in the United States perform 55.2% of all private-sector R&D in the nation, driving more innovation than any other sector. Dunmore has PHDs, engineers, and technical experts innovating for markets from packaging to space exploration. 4. Taken alone, manufacturing in the United States would be the eighth-largest economy in the world. We make a difference! 5. Over the next decade, 4 million manufacturing jobs will likely be needed, and 2.1 million are expected to go unfilled if we do not inspire more people to pursue modern manufacturing careers.

FYI is 11! 🎂 I've been taking a bit of time to reflect on the early days and what came before. It's certainly been hard work the last few years but it's made us stronger and better than ever. We have an absolute dream team at the minute and it feels like we're firing on all cylinders! 🔥 Here are my personal FYI 11 highlights of the last 11 years in no particular order!.... 1.) Getting our first fork lift truck. 2.) Employing an estimator, because it was just me doing ALL the pricing.... 3.) Moving our production site to a place 2.5 times bigger. 4.) Pitching and starting to work with the biggest energy drinks brand in the World. 5.) Launching FYI Connect (Our portal). 6.) Celebrating 10 years service of two staff members. 7.) Buying our own litho press so i didn't have to spend my evenings putting together flyer runs anymore. 8.) Launching a range of brewery specific POS. 9.) Winning our first design retainer. 10.) A day out in Amsterdam with Dave Crapper 11.) Our campaign with @ingoodcompanyleeds supporting Frontline Workers and spreading joy to the streets during the pandemic.
