In 1919, when the Bauhaus was founded in Weimar, Hugo Junkers was already an established engineer and entrepreneur, known for his revolutionary ideas in aircraft construction. Although Junkers was not directly associated with the Bauhaus, he shared the movement's fundamental principles: functionality, simplicity, and the use of modern technologies and materials in design. Hugo Junkers' influence on the Bauhaus is best understood through his innovative constructions and progressive use of materials such as duralumin. These materials were also applied in the designs of the Bauhaus school, particularly in architecture and furniture design, where simplicity of form and functionality were paramount. Imagine a scene where Bauhaus students undertake an excursion to the Junkers works. Fascinated by the airplanes, they recognise the parallels to their own ideals: the fusion of art and technology, the creation of objects that are both beautiful and practical. Inspired by Junkers' pioneering work, they return to the studio, ready to push the boundaries of traditional art and create something entirely new. Thus, although Hugo Junkers was not directly a part of the Bauhaus, his spirit of innovation and pursuit of functionality were closely intertwined with the ideals of the Bauhaus movement. His legacy continues in the timeless Bauhaus designs celebrated to this day, and in every Junkers watch that measures not only time but also tells a story of creativity and progress.
