Reflecting on my panel discussion this week at the second annual Trade and Investment Forum hosted by @SME Finance Forum affiliates BCR Publishing and ITFA. The topic focused on Emerging market prospects - Focus on Asia, Africa, Middle East. I exchanged my views on access to finance and challenges of SMEs; the role of multilaterals and importance of Advocacy through platforms such as SME Finance Forum. The key aspects I emphasized were: ✅ The opportunity profile of $5.7 trillion unmet financing needs of MSMEs globally; underserved segments like women entrepreneurs and informal enterprises with finance gaps of $1.9 trillion and $2.1 Trillion respectively; there is no net zero without MSMEs contributing 40-50% of GHG emissions; with 40% of MSMEs assets tied up in receivables, need for scaling working capital finance for MSMEs. ✅ Supply Chain Finance is a promising solution with over $1 trillion MSME finance opportunity globally but lacking scale when it comes to regional and domestic value chains. The 5 corner model – Corporates, Financial Institutions, Digital Platforms, Regulators and SMEs need to effectively collaborate to achieve scale and down streaming into deep tier financing. ✅ Multilateral institutions play a crucial role by offering solutions across funding (debt and Equity), Risk Mitigation instrumentals, capacity building support to the intermediaries and influencing the enabling environment. There is a need to augment mobilization and blended finance solutions going forward. ✅ SME Finance Forum, Managed by the IFC (International Finance Corporation) plays an important role by knowledge sharing, transferring best practice, fostering partnerships, mustering support of influence groups and leading advocacy. The 2023 report finds two incipient #trends that could be consolidated in forthcoming reports: 1) the #US accounted for 59% of global transactions #volume in the recovery period (from just 22% in the pandemicperiod). 2) #China saw #SWFs #investments drop to half in deal value and the number of transactions.
