We are proud to announce the launch of our annual Cocoa Charter Progress Report. In our latest report, some of our achievements include: 🍫 93% traceable cocoa with polygon mapping, a way to know the boundary of the cocoa farm 🌳 50,000 farmers received targeted support to improve farming practices 📖 25 schools built or renovated (133 in total by 2023) We aim to be a driving force in a cocoa sector where production creates value for all: where the livelihoods of farming communities are improved; children's right are respected; and the environment is protected through sustainable agricultural practices. Very important study ! I had the chance to visit some farms in such areas as several IFAD projects beneficiaries were part and as we also seek to support similar transitions in other areas ; what is missing from the summary is the key roles of women leadership and gender tranasformative approach in fostering such transitions ! #agroecology #foodsystemstransformation #biodiversitynetgain

“Everyone is fixated on 1.5C [above pre-industrial levels], and it’s a very important target. But actually, some very bad things could happen, in terms of soil degradation, water scarcity and desertification, way before 1.5C.” Alain-Richard Donwahi, President of the UN'S Desertification Conference underscored issues evident already among the communities supported by the Haller Foundation in Kenya. Rising temperatures combine with poor farming practices to wreck havoc on landscapes. The Haller team works to educate smallholder farmers on sustainable, regenerative techniques that not only prevent further degradation but help drive incremental improvements. We need more of these studies. As a young student of environmental economics, the books I read would most of time conjungate in the conditional form: "externalities in sustainable food production would demonstrate the rationale", "....might show that ecological agriculture is more efficient", etc. But as few were indeed measuring these externalities, standard, chemical-intensive and monoculture agriculture continued to rain absolute on the "efficiency podium". Well, this is a fallacy. We knew it and now we measure it. Efficiency is much more than output measured in kg/hectare. TCA (True Cost Accounting)-type methods allows to comprehensively measure the economic, social, health and other impacts of food systems. Put all of this in the balance and it is an easy fight. Check this exciting results of a state-wide agroecological programme in Andhra Pradesh, India, called Community-Based Natural Farming (APCNF): - Higher crop diversity (4 crops vs 2.1 crops in counterfactuals) - Higher yields (increased by 11% in average) - Higher income (average 49% net increase) - Increased social capital, largely influenced by women empowrement - Strong correlation between lower on-farm health risks and farmers that transitioned to natural farming - Evidence of higher health-costs and correlation between higher incidence of short-term exposure and symptoms to chemicals in conventional farms (how obvious) - Higher dietary diversity in APCNF households I'm pretty sure we would find similar results comparing agroecological systems in my Brazil, even for grain (soybeans, maize) specialized systems. Who wants to bet on this?

Climate risks are reshaping market dynamics. How do agricultural businesses adapt? Australia’s MDF and PHAMA Plus are working with Pacific business partners to manage and adapt to climate risks and tap into business opportunities. Our partners have found that investing in #climatesmart agriculture and #sustainableagriculture practices can help businesses tap into new market demand for environmentally friendly, low-carbon produce, through agricultural certifications and value chain emissions verification. A new collaborative brief by MDF and PHAMA Plus looks at innovative, market-based ways to enhance resilience in the agriculture sectors of #TimorLeste and #PacificIslandCountries by: - Introducing climate-resilient seeds and crops - Supporting farmers to reduce the excessive use of agrochemicals and practise integrated pest and disease management - Promoting improved waste management and the use of organic fertiliser to ensure soil health - Supporting investments in clean energy for food production and primary processing, and - Co-investing value chain emission verification and certification, among other things. Attended the groundbreaking report launch, "Natural Farming Through a Wide-Angle Lens". The study underscores how True Cost Accounting (TCA) can unveil the hidden value in food systems and steer us towards sustainable transformation. Recalling my first encounter with the Global Alliance for the Future of Food on TCA five years ago, the remarkable progress made is heartening. This report, armed with compelling, science-based evidence of the impacts of the Andhra Pradesh Community-Managed Natural Farming project, emphasizes the critical role data plays in human-centric programming and decision-making. Given the urgency of the challenges we face, and the compelling results this report presents, my perspective is clear: the path forward lies in disseminating this knowledge rapidly. We need to equip leaders at local and provincial levels with this data to foster better decisions for our planet. The transformative policies and practices outlined in the study serve as a roadmap in this journey - a journey that is ongoing, but direction is clear. This #EarthDay2024, CNFA highlights the importance of #climatesmart agriculture in addressing environmental shocks and promoting sustainable agriculture sector growth. In #Niger, the Feed the Future-funded USAID Yalwa activity helped advance the production and adoption of locally-sourced, organic and cost-efficient fertilizer as an alternative to imported varieties susceptible to price shocks. The co-benefits to farmer incomes, community resilience and ecological health shows how agricultural development and good environmental stewardship can help meet the world’s growing demand for food. #EarthDay2024
