According to WHO, 420 000 people die from foodborne diseases each year. This number states why food safety is such an important topic globally. As bacterial contamination, mainly due to Salmonella, is the main reason for diarrheal diseases, the livestock industry has a major part to play. These bacteria contaminate different food products from animal origin like eggs, meat and milk. Therefore, controlling pathogenic bacteria in the intestine of livestock improves food safety and reduces the incidence of several foodborne diseases.
Certain feed additives are capable of doing that. For example, N-force, based on medium chain fatty acids, acts as an antimicrobial agent, which directly lowers the count of pathogenic bacteria. On the other hand, Butifour, based on butyric acid, reduces the incidence of diarrhea by avoiding inflammation and supporting the intestinal integrity. Hence both feed additives could reduce fecal shedding of pathogenic bacteria that may contaminate animal food products.
