👭 Pride with Purpose: Beyond the Rainbow 👬 As Pride Month unfolds, are you tired of being inundated with promotional messages, images, and merchandise full of rainbows, too? I’m so tired of all the rainbow logos and more every June. Don’t get me wrong; I’m a strong ally and respect those businesses whose participation is genuine and authentic. I’m not a fan of lip service or performative marketing. Yesterday, I walked past the optical shop pictured below. It’s one of many examples right now. Where are all these companies the other 11 months of the year? Yes, everyone must feel welcome. It’s also crucial to remember that genuine support for the LGBTQIA+ community goes beyond “rainbow washing.” At Spodek & Co., creating safe spaces for all identities is a year-round commitment rooted in equity, inclusion, and dignity. Our differences strengthen us, and we’re dedicated to ensuring everyone feels valued and respected, not just in June but every day. We’re far from perfect, but we try our best. This Pride Month, let’s all strive to find ways to support and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community all year round with authenticity and respect. 🌈 How is your business supporting Pride this year? #PrideMonth #AuthenticSupport #Marketing

Dear brands, We're days away from the beginning of Pride month, and my feed is already being rainbow-washed 🌈 👉 Rainbow marketing across all socials. 👉 Every bit of corporate merchandise you can imagine in a (you guessed it) rainbow edition. 👉 Special discounts for Pride month. 👉 New rainbow logos for profile pictures. And though to some it may seem like a nice signal, I need you to know that actions speak louder than logos. So before you post that rainbow-hued pic, please ask yourself: 👉 Are your marketing campaigns inclusive? 👉 Have you got the right policies and support in place for your LGBTQIA+ staff? 👉 Are you amplifying LGBTQIA+ voices? 👉 Are you using inclusive language and representation? 👉 Are you putting your money where your mouth is? 👉 Are you staying in the know on LGBTQIA+ issues? 👉 Are you really trying to uplift the community or boost Q2 sales? 👉 Are you hiring at all levels from the LGBTQIA+ community? If the answer to any of the above is no, it might be worth starting there. Allyship doesn't start on June 1st and end on the 30th. Yours sincerely, A member of the LGBTQIA+ community who knows you can do better.

LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is in just a few weeks and please, for the love of god, if you have anything to do with your company's or organization's or personal brand and are going to "rainbow-up" your logo or create a bunch of Pride-centered promos and messaging? Don't even consider it without also crafting a clear, clean, public message explaining *why* aligning or promoting Pride is important to your business, brand, mission, vision, and work. It doesn't have to be complex, but it has to be real. Tell us your history, tell us your perspective, tell us about your advocacy and it's purpose. Don't just slap a rainbow behind your logo for a month. We can tell. And we're over it. This isn't like getting dressed up for Halloween. This is a month dedicated to honor the LGBTQIA+ community and culture, commemorating the struggles we have endured over time, and celebrating our collective and individual contributions, talents, diversity and existence makes our everyday lives so important, bright, and unique. Be part of the conversations, not just part of the window-dressing. There is still time to plan and deliver on purpose next month.

On Day 10 of LGBTQIA+ History Month, we pay homage to Jose Julio Sarria, a trailblazing drag queen, and activist whose fearless presence and advocacy paved the way for LGBTQIA+ visibility and empowerment. Jose Julio Sarria’s contributions to drag culture and civil rights have left an indelible mark on the LGBTQIA+ community, inspiring generations to embrace authenticity and celebrate diversity. As we honour Jose Julio Sarria’s legacy, it’s crucial for businesses to recognise the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation and inclusivity in the entertainment industry and take proactive steps to support LGBTQIA+ performers and creators. Supporting LGBTQIA+ performers and artists is a vital aspect of fostering diversity and inclusion in entertainment. Businesses can sponsor LGBTQIA+ performances, productions, and events, providing platforms for queer voices to shine and stories to be told authentically. Funding diverse productions that center LGBTQIA+ experiences, themes, and characters is essential for promoting representation and amplifying marginalised voices in entertainment. By investing in diverse storytelling, businesses not only support LGBTQIA+ creators but also contribute to a more inclusive and representative cultural landscape. Ensuring equal opportunities for LGBTQIA+ performers and creators requires proactive efforts to dismantle systemic barriers and promote inclusivity. Businesses can collaborate with LGBTQIA+ advocacy organisations like Stonewall’s Entertainment Guide in the UK and GLAAD’s Media Institute in the USA to access resources, training, and best practices for promoting LGBTQIA+ representation and inclusivity in the entertainment industry. By fostering diversity in entertainment, businesses play a crucial role in shaping narratives, challenging stereotypes, and creating spaces where all individuals feel seen, heard, and celebrated. As we celebrate Jose Julio Sarria’s legacy and reflect on LGBTQIA+ History Month, let us reaffirm our commitment to advancing LGBTQIA+ representation, embracing diversity, and creating a more inclusive and representative world for all. Together, through our collective efforts, we can build a future where LGBTQIA+ voices are celebrated, valued, and uplifted in entertainment and beyond. #JoseJulioSarria #InclusiveEntertainment #DragCulture

In the corporate industry, retained work isn't a mere preference—it's the foundation our world is built on. 🌱 Imagine a world where the commitment to diversity isn't a fleeting thought, but an everyday reality. 😒 A world where celebrating marginalised groups doesn't just pop up on your calendar once a month—it becomes an integral part of your brand. Sound farfetched? It isn't. We've seen the change firsthand while working with brands that live and breathe this ethos. This October isn't just another month—it's another chance for these brands to extend their unwavering commitment to their communities. Personally, I've loved seeing the work that a couple of brands this year: - eBay UK took the streets by storm with their Notting Hill Carnival activation - Spotify continues to amplify voices from the ground up, supporting grassroots movements through ongoing campaigns. - Pinterest is fueling the dreams of the black community with their black creator fund, providing ongoing support to the communities that keep their platform buzzing. These brands know that diversity isn't just a buzzword—it's the future. And they're leading the charge. 💫 Any others you've seen?
There are countless stories of brands being offensive or insensitive, take the Burger King Equal Buns campaign. With’ top’ and ‘bottom’ buns, and their bizarre tagline “equal buns for equal rights'', it seems like brands are scrambling to grasp onto anything that could connect with the LGBTQIA+ audience during Pride Month. 🚩 🤔Does the LGBTQIA+ community only deserve recognition during pride? Do men only suffer from mental health in November? Do Black people only exist in October? 🤔 We cannot excuse limiting groups stereotypes when there is an easily avoidable option; having more voices in the room from diverse backgrounds. 📣 🥁 We will always bang the drum for difference at Axe + Saw, because we ourselves continually see how our contrasting backgrounds, standpoints and insights help us see our campaign ideas from a 360 viewpoint. If boardrooms and communications agencies continue to act as echo chambers with no one ever offering a slightly different perspective, nothing will change. ⏳When brands only feel the need to connect with certain demographics until the timers up, it will only ever feel like a superficial money grab. Brands need to start making meaningful connections across all audiences…we’re looking to October to see what brands will bring this Black History Month. 👀 Do better. #diversityandinclusion #meaningfulconnections #blackhistorymonth

How to think beyond the rainbow 🌈 Last weekend was Christopher Street Day in Hamburg and the city was flooded by colorful partypeople and billboards with rainbowflags and bad headlines. The copy is usually something like: "Colorful. Diversity. Tolerance. For everyone. We show our true colors." What you actually show are your true clichés. Just because an ad is targeted at homosexuals, doesn't mean it has to suck. Ever since the word "rainbowwashing" was used, it should be clear to an advertiser that you should come up with something smarter. This specific target audience is trendy, creative, edgy, daring and everything but safe. Think the sarcastic humour in the movies of John Waters. Think the extravagance of RuPaul, Lady Gaga or Grace Jones. Think the creativity of Keith Haring or Andy Warhol. The queer scene oozes creativity and your ads should be likewise. I'm not the target audience but having good friends who can claim one of the colours on the rainbowflag, I think I can fairly estimate their reactions. What do you think of all these rainbow-ads? Good intentions or just lazy creativity? Let me know your opinion in the comments. #rainbowwashing #rainbow #gay #creativity #freelancecopywriter

Purpose driven with a passion for helping others to embrace the power of accessible and inclusive communications.
Accessibility benefits everyone. When you need it, it matters. So why not make it matter in every plan, event and communication?
I love this perfect example of how accessibility would benefit everyone... Grammy Winner Tyla, needed to be lifted up the stairs at The Met Gala because her dress is made of sand, If accessibility was embedded in to every facet of our society, from everyday buildings to glamorous galas it would improve everybody's experience. And as Jessica Jordan Ping mentioned, if the barriers at The Met Gala were removed, we might not only see greater disability representation at the event but also a higher level of artistry because when functionality and access are addressed, one can focus more on fashion and art. Accessibility and innovation go hand in hand. Can we please make The Met Gala accessible next year, it’s pretty clear non disabled folks would also benefit…! Image description: Tyla is being carried up the Met Gala stairs, three men in suits by her side assisting her. #DisabilityRights #Accessibility https://lnkd.in/eFSjuhKi
