“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” Everyone seems to be doing advent calendars and Christmas count-downs, so I thought I’d look at what pantomime characters can teach us about business. The Wicked Queen in Snow White asks for feedback – it’s something we advise our clients to do – whether it’s feedback from your colleagues, or your customers. The phrasing of the question clearly leaves something to be desired – it’s obviously leading, and the answer is meant to be “You, of course” But what is worse is the way she reacts when she gets the answer she doesn’t like. Of course that’s the thing about pantomime villains – they get licence to behave however they like, unconstrained by social rules. But if you react this way to receiving bad news (you don’t, do you?) it very quickly stops people giving you the bad news in the first place. Receiving feedback you don’t like is not easy, but it’s a really valuable opportunity to find out what people really think, and what you can do to improve. Thank them (for being brave enough to tell you) and ask open questions to find out why they don’t like what you’re doing, and how you can improve. Then make sure you act on it. Last year we went to a joyous local production of “Cinderella and her fellas” – full of the usual corny jokes, inuendo and poking fun at figures in authority – what I liked the most was they way they dealt with mistakes and fluffed lines – owning their mistakes, laughing at themselves and carrying on.
