We can all remember a beautiful farm or ranch we once admired that’s no longer. Perhaps it’s now a neighborhood, a shopping center or one of America’s fastest growing obsessions, a RV Park! New census data shows a 15% drop in beef ranches and that most ranchers are now well over 65 years old and aging! The average herd size is now only 21 head and it’s the large 500 plus head producers that dominate beef agriculture! And the number of acres of land per head has decreased as large producers raise more cattle on less land. That’s the opposite of how we set out to naturally raise Cut Beef! We graze over four acres per head and ensure each herd has access to natural water and shade. It’s a choice we’ve made that comes at an expense but brings forth so much good, not only in our beef but our community! It’s important to support small and mid-sized local farms and ranches. Support can come in stocking your freezer, gifting beef to recognize employees and clients or choosing local meat for your cookouts. It very well may be your purchase that keeps a small farm or ranch operating instead of shutting down and selling out! I can’t tell you the number of times it’s been one of you that saved us! So please always remember to Know Your Rancher and Know What You Eat Eats!

Being asked a number of times regarding how to support your local farmers and ranchers, so here are a few ideas to get you started. 1) Stop shopping at Whole Foods (this applies to most large scale chain grocers, but I hold WF responsible for a majority of misinformation) - contrary to popular belief Whole Foods does not support local missions and actually carries numerous brands that are detrimental to a holistic ranching and farming mentality (I know this seems impossible, but its very doable, you simply have to be willing to learn and re-wire your routine) 2) Start shopping at your local (closest to local) farmer's market - this is a great opportunity to expose yourself to different seasonal offerings from your local community, learn what is available to you and ask questions to those farmers and ranchers in your local area 3) Talk with your rancher or farmer - ask them where to buy their products outside the market, what restaurants or local grocers carry their products 4) Eat at restaurants that support local farmers and ranchers -be selective where you spend your money, the changes that are necessary to fix the broken cycle will only be made by the consumer #shoplocal #letyourmoneytalk #localfarmers #agriculture #farming #farmingforthefuture

🐑 What's the difference between lamb, hogget and mutton? We asked PfL member Fidelity Weston from Romshed Farm, who farms 100% pasture-fed (aka Pasture for Life) sheep. 🗣️ "I think the term new spring lamb is somewhat misleading as many are not ready until autumn. If you are buying lamb in the spring and it is being sold as new spring lamb it is often born at Christmas and fed cereals to be ready for spring.” It’s important to note here that this is not always the case but the majority of spring lamb. There are farmers that lamb in autumn and feed only grass through the winter, but it is best to ask your local sheep farmer or retailer for traceability. What's the age difference? < 1 year - new spring lamb 1-2 year old lamb - hogget 2+ year old - mutton 📍 Find Pasture for Life certified producers selling 100% pasture-fed lamb, hogget and mutton https://lnkd.in/edFzedqD #lamb #hogget #mutton #lambing #sheepfarmer

Denver Ballot Initiative Would Ban Slaughterhouses Article in Colorado Politics by Rachel Gabel Article excerpts: A fringe animal-rights activist group has submitted signatures to the Denver Clerk and Recorder to be certified to place a proposal on the municipal ballot to outlaw slaughterhouses in Denver. Not only is agriculture not at the table on this one, but consumers also won’t have a voice either. " "Outlawing slaughterhouses in Denver is a step toward voting in food scarcity and higher food prices for families not only on the margins, but families like mine, and likely yours, who are spending more at the grocery store than ever before. The precedent set by the passage of such a prohibition is dangerous and puts not only the National Western Stock Show and the larger agriculture industry in the crosshairs. The NWSS, which has been the crown jewel of Denver since 1906, brings in about $120 million during the 16 best days in January, in addition to $10 million through other events at the complex and more than $6 million in local and state tax revenue. This is a ban based purely in emotion without thought to the employee owners of Superior Farms, the taxpayers of Denver or Colorado, ag producers, or consumers. 28,000 farmers put out of business by big factories, corporations, and yes China in North Carolina. Take a listen. Also, Smithfield Foods, the world's biggest pork processor, is permanently closing 35 hog farm sites in Missouri and laying off 92 employees in October, according to a Missouri Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice. And before someone says it, my plan is to create awareness and not division in Agriculture! This is a problem. Let’s pray the proper legislation takes place to prevent these big corps from buying up more land and shutting down our local farmers and ranchers. And for those who can, stop buying from these big chains. #robertfkennedyjr #realag #agriculture #agwomenconnect #farmers #ranchers #nofarmersnofood #thetruth #supportyourfarmer #supportyourranchers https://lnkd.in/g5aS9wMN

Pigs are a great source of meat production - homegrown bacon, ham, and sausage are delicious and sustainable. Pigs are also great for consuming agricultural byproducts and kitchen scraps, and their manure is an excellent fertilizer that can help improve land quality. If you’re thinking of keeping pigs on your Florida land, you don’t need nearly as much space as cows and horses. You can generally get by with up to 25 pigs on a single acre. In addition to space, shelter, feed, water, and healthcare are all essential for keeping pigs on your Central Florida property. #ChoosePalmetto #PalmettoRealty #DeLandRealty #BuyingLand #SellingLand #Property #SupportLocal #VolusiaCounty #DeLand #OrangeCity #DeBary #DeLeonSprings #WestVolusiaCounty #RealEstate #FloridaRealEstate #LandSales #LakeHelen #DaytonaBeach #Pierson
