The EPA's new AWIA enforcement alert seems to be a step in the right direction from a compliance perspective although I do wonder why it's taken so long to get here for regulations signed into law in 2018 with compliance deadlines in 2020. At the same time there's a lot of work to be done to bridge the funding gap because the majority of water utilities are small enough that they don't have the funds necessary to implement true cybersecurity best practice in the OT space. As long as this continues to be a challenge, the drinking water sector will remain at risk. #watercybersecurity #otcybersecurity Kevin M. Morley, PhD Jacques Brados, CISSP, MBA Dragos, Inc. Claroty
“In many cases, the water utilities have found themselves unable through lack of resources to complete some of the basic best practice cyber hygiene activities and sooner or later this will reach a breaking point,” said Christopher Walcutt, CISM, CISSP, CSO of DirectDefense. The White House warns water facilities to improve cybersecurity as nation-state hackers pounce. State to submit plans by 28 June. In February, the FBI disrupted Chinese hackers hiding inside American water systems and other critical infrastructure, with some digital intruders lurking for at least five years. Apart from damaging the water system altogether, experts warned that hackers could also adjust chemical levels in water or stop the flow of water or functioning of wastewater systems. Here's a quick video of how a hacker launches an attack, but more importantly how your security team can detect it in real time! bit.ly/3Q8L6ri #Criticalinfrastructure #Cybersecurity https://lnkd.in/gU5A-Sed

Increasingly, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are being targeted by nation-state hackers. By June 28, 2024, the White House has asked the states to provide plans on preventing attacks on water systems and Congressional bill, H.R. 7922 would establish a body to enforce cybersecurity measures on drinking and waste water systems. Resources are available at sites such as the EPA and through cybersecurity partners such as Presidio. #Presidio #FutureBuilt #EPA #SCADA #Cybersecurity
