A real eye-opener for me during the 9 month Connect and Drive experience at Capgemini was that there are two distinct types of aspiring leaders. The first type often asks their manager "Why am I never given an interesting opportunity to lead?" Whereas the second always comes running to their manager "Hey check out this cool new thing that will fix a big problem for us. I want to drive an effort here!" Then there are three types of established leaders. The first type is threatened by the initiative; what if the subordinate outshines them?? The second type is happy to see the initiative. It will make the team look stronger. The third type does not have time to care. The thing is, it's YOUR choice what kind of leader you want to be. It's YOU who takes the first step towards the future you want. In a vast organization like Capgemini, there is endless opportunity to grow, if you _choose_ to. With so many clients, so many markets, so many emerging technologies, so fast evolution in running delivery, there is more potential improvement _this_ year than you could realize in your entire lifetime. So you have every opportunity to pick that idea that suits your skills and taste perfectly, network around it, build support, have fun, prototype and make real change. The future is unknown. I will employ more people this year. The world will change. Tech will change. Clients will change. I have no idea exactly how 2024 will look. 'Building inclusive teams' was an interesting panel discussion as part of the 'Women Leadership Summit 2024' conducted by Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. Thanks to the organizing team for inviting me as a panelist. The discussion started with what inclusivity is for organizations and the society. For me, it is a meritocracy driven system, without any bias for gender, race, or religion. I shared examples of role models from the 'Women in STEM 2021' book brought out by CII, for which I was fortunate to be the chief editor (link below). These leaders went beyond their call of duty, realizing their bigger purpose of life for the country or society. Career paths are no longer just vertical, to go up the ladder. Glass ceilings may not be relevant any more, with T-shaped careers where we can go deep into a topic, or broadly across domains, functions, and roles. I've primarily worked in male-dominated industries and the regular feedback that I've got is "Pallavi, you're not aggressive enough". In my initial days as a workstream leader, I took the feedback personally and tried to move away from my natural leadership style of 'walk the talk' and adopt the prevalent leadership ethos of 'use force or favour to get things done'. It took me a while to learn the difference between being assertive and being aggressive ie having and practicing Emotional Intelligence (EI). So if you, especially women leaders, have high EI and don't know if it translates to leadership, know that you have the MOAT. Let's discuss why..... ✅ EI is critical in stakeholder engagement which is critical for leadership strategy. For instance, Tesla through effective stakeholder engagement increased its revenue by 38%. ✅ High EI translates to powerful communications and empathetic dialogue to build consensus. For instance, Starface World using empathetic communication in 'pimple patch' branding to reach GenZ. ✅ Leaders with high EI are more adaptable and resilient. For instance, Indra Nooyi led 'Performance with Purpose' transformation strategy yielded 4x returns for PepsiCo. ✅ EI facilitates measuring and evaluation which is essential to optimize outcomes and reroute strategies. For instance, Apple's effective apology when #TaylorSwift announced a public boycott of its free 1-month trial. ✅ EI fosters a growth mindset and a commitment to lifelong learning and self-improvement. For instance, nadella satya, CEO Microsoft credits empathy for helping him lead major transformation for the firm.
