Organic transparency of communication which is enabled by digitisation is key. There is a paradigm shift in b2b communication happening and the positive externalities which it is bringing in terms of traceability, auditability, and better governance are deep.
Governments and businesses can better reach sustainability pledges through improved supply chain transparency. In a recent CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly article by Jack Macfarlane, consumer demands for companies to track their environmental footprints across their supply chains continue to rise. To meet these demands, businesses must have supply chain transparency upstream, downstream, and across all organizations. Here are some key takeaways on how government and business sectors can have a cleaner supply chain: 1. Qualified Supplier Selection: Research and contract third-party suppliers with higher ESG and strengthen supplier relationship management. 2. Sustainable Procurement Processes: Strategic sourcing to manage risks within supply chains from the outset. 3. Ongoing Monitoring & Management: AI and digital software to measure and improve procurement processes, data-gathering approaches, and spending. 4. Sustainability Goals: Set goals to continuously improve sustainability, lower production costs, and drive more revenue with a steady supply chain. According to EY, 43% of companies expect increased share prices, resulting from their supply chain sustainability efforts in the next 1-3 years. A greener supply chain process is not only a better eco-friendly business practice, but it can be profitable too. Meeting Sustainability Goals brings the same challenges as any other performance goals. If they are developed and/or measured in a silo, then the environmental footprint across the supply chain will be sub-optimized. One partner may adjust their production run times and balance with offsets, but their unmetered pull on their supply stream and push down on the demand stream may require partners up and down the chain to increase their footprint to balance the changes. Pushing unrealistic deadlines onto suppliers may require them to break 60-hour work weeks or decrease their emission protections to increase throughput. Whether its velocity or sustainability (or likely a balance of the two), sustainability comes from working with your supply chain community to create win-win relationships.

🚀 Most of our clients already have clear sustainability targets. However, the gap between intention and action persists, due to backward-looking ESG reporting and the inability to predict future impacts. 🌍 With appropriate resources, sustainable supply chain planning plays a crucial role in data-driven decision-making as it can integrate ESG factors into the equation, adding social and environmental impacts to shape demand and supply scenarios. 🍀 At EY, we offer methodologies and tools to empower supply chain planners to take the driver seat and guide operations along the client’s sustainable journey by optimizing Volume, Value and ESG dimensions. Moreover, EY partners and co-innovates with numerous advanced planning software providers to support our clients to steer their operations towards more resilient and sustainable future. 📢 Do you want to know more?
