European Council of Shopping Places (ECSP)’s Post

The Hungarian presidency will be a transition presidency. There will be little legislative activity. But a Council presidency is always important. We all know that Hungary is a difficult EU member and that there are many areas where Budapest takes positions that are not in the mainstream. The question is whether the government will use the Presidency to highlight the divisions or whether it will play the traditional role of the honest broker. My guess and my hope is they will do the latter and use the post election time to work towards more unity, mutual understanding and cooperation. I know from my work with the HU presidency in 2011 that they have a very good administration and that they can do a good job if the political will is there to do just that.

It goes without saying that ABT is also a major topic at an international trade fair like Transport Ticketing Global. Accordingly, we asked Carme Fabregas from Barcelona, Gianluca Cuzzolin from Venice and Nils Zeino-Mahmalat from Cologne about their experiences with the topic at today's panel. Because public transport works differently in different countries, the panellists agreed that there can be no solution that works uniformly across Europe. That is why the members of our ABT group are not working on one definition, but on answers and definitions for different use cases.

Really enjoyable session at #WMXEurope today - New Age of Customer-Centric Logistics with some great subject experts: Patrick Frith of Avalara showed how the tricky world of x-border (thanks Boris☹️) can be circumnavigated with clever tech and a dedicated focus on customer experience. Marc Sarmiento showed why he is the 'Q' of Österreichische Post AG with some great customer segmentation and applied solutions from his box of tricks..... and I forgive him for putting me in older segment 😉. Matthew Jacques showed why ZigZag Global are the absolute experts in structured returns solutions with great insight into customer requirements and the interesting inter-relationship with merchant priorities....and now I know what 'reventory' is 😃. Last but not least Misko Kancko from Canada Post / Postes Canada showed he is not only an expert in Scottish Malt Whisky 🥃 but highlighted why top down leadership was imperative in driving a truly customer-centric organisation. Trade disputes are on the rise. The Vienna Rules 2021 contain a number of useful provisions for efficient and cost-effective dispute resolution. Among other things, the arbitral tribunal may consider pleadings and the submission of evidence admissible only up to a certain point in the proceedings (Art. 28(2)), it may take evidence on its own initiative (Art. 29(1)), and decide to hold an oral hearing in person or otherwise, e.g. by videoconference (Art. 30(1)) or consider the joinder of a third party upon request of a party or a third party (Art. 14). The possibility to transmit arbitral awards by electronic means if it is not possible or practicable to transmit the hard copy within a reasonable time or if the parties so agree (Art. 36(5)) is particularly useful if arbitral awards cannot be delivered abroad in times of crisis due to a lack of courier services. The VIAC Community Ambassador Network meetings (the next one will be held in Istanbul, Türkiye) provide a good opportunity to learn about the benefits of a cost-effective dispute resolution mechanism:
