🍯 MeliBio, initially focused on precision-fermented honey, shifted its product direction to plant-based honey called Mellody due to customer demand. This shift accelerated their product launch timeline from 5-7 years to 3 years. The company is set to launch its plant-based honey product in Europe through a partnership with Narayan Foods, targeting 75,000 stores in Germany and the UK. The focus is on Europe, the UK, and the US in the short term, with potential consideration of expansion into the Asian market in the future. MeliBio is preparing for a Series A funding round to support its expansion, with a focus on market testing and customer feedback as key drivers. Having achieved medium-scale production (10,000 lbs per day) capacity in just 3 years, the company plans to achieve price parity with traditional honey types by 2024. Estonian scientists help local producers to create new plant-based foods In response to consumer demand, the food industry has shown an increasing interest in marketing foods based on plant proteins and other plant byproducts. Food businesses have hired scientists to help them develop innovative plant-based end products with high export potential and added value. Scientists in Estonia have begun to explore the use of plant proteins in food, while the local food industry is increasingly trying to incorporate plant-based raw materials into food processing in order to remain competitive. So far, nearly everything on the shelves has been produced outside of the country. Local crops grown in Estonia are mostly used as raw materials in traditional industries, animal feed, and unprocessed exports. In Norway, we take pride in being a part of the NORSKVegetar innovation project.���� Its aim is to create new, useful ingredients and sustainable, delicious vegetarian products with strong nutritional value and consumer appeal. We achieve this by utilizing local plant-based materials. 🌱 Current vegetarian products in Norway are either imported or use imported materials. NORSKVegetar is addressing significant challenges to enhance the production of vegetarian items using domestic resources. This includes refining plant-based components, optimizing raw material pre-treatment, maximizing sustainability through residual material usage, ensuring nutritional excellence, and gaining high market acceptance. 🍽️ Recently, we conducted a workshop with our menu team, representatives from our supplier JÆDER Ådne Espeland AS, and the research institute Nofima. In this workshop, we experimented with vegetarian products in our recipes and provided feedback for ongoing product innovation. Our next step involves testing these products in our meal kits.
