"Japan's Experiment with Unmanned Stores: Innovative or Imperfect?" In Japan, the trend of unmanned stores, where purchases are made without any staff present, is on the rise. Reporter Seiji Nakazawa experienced one such store in Tokyo, feeling as though he had stepped into a realm of video games or science fiction due to the absence of visible staff. At Origin Delica, the store offered a variety of ready-to-eat meals and snacks, akin to a typical store. However, Seiji was greeted by a persistent alarm sound, which he traced back to a malfunctioning cash register, with no staff in sight to address the issue. During his attempt to purchase items, Seiji faced difficulties with two out of three cash registers. The one that functioned reported a shortage of change, prompting him to seek assistance. When a staff member did arrive, they appeared just as bewildered as Seiji. While Seiji initially considered shoplifting as a potential issue for such stores, he realized that technical malfunctions could also pose significant challenges. Concluding that the concept of fully unmanned stores might be premature, Seiji expressed a preference for traditional supermarkets with self-checkout options, suggesting a balance between automation and human presence. #japanunmannedstores #retailinnovation #tokyoshopping #techglitches #futureofretail

The sight below might look familiar to operations managers in logistics and mobility companies - hand-drawn zones that overlap or leave gaps. These gaps cause business problems and confusing customer experiences - what if a bike rental customer tries to end their ride in an area which is simultaneously both a parking area and a no-parking area? To solve this problem, Honeycomb Zone Manager now supports smart snapping. As you edit zones in Honeycomb, the corners of zones will automatically ‘snap’ to nearby zones, making it easy to ensure that zones are perfectly aligned and there are no gaps or overlaps. These aligned zones can then be exported to GeoJSON or saved directly to operational systems. Better zones = fewer problems for your teams! The data shown below is real zone data near McLaren Park in SF, from SFMTA (San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency). This data is provided to shared vehicle companies via their MDS Agency API to enforce micromobility parking and pricing regulations. #operationsmanagers #logistics #zones #micromobility #geospatial #geojson
