I know when a deal is taking a long time and there are lots of complications and negotiating points, I’m probably not going to make any money.” "There are two kinds of people in this world:" 1. "People who are short-term and transactional, and think the way to make money is through the right contractual structure and the right level of chiseling." 2. "People who take a long-term and expansive view of value creation and understand that being easy to work with is a feature of getting more opportunities to do more work together." "This just means the big idea people understand how the world works."

For early stage start up founders, I’ve seen this challenge with cofounders time and time again. In this video I suggest a simple solution to this dynamic that can help address the challenge that often arises between cofounders.

One of my mentors is a top VC in New York City. She's perhaps the best early stage investor I’ve ever met (Coinbase, Notion, Makerbot, Pinterest, the list goes on). I'll never forget what she told me about negotiation: “The best deals always happen with the least fanfare and the least negotiating.  I know when a deal is taking a long time and there’s lots of complications and negotiating points, I’m probably not going to make any money.” I’ve found the same thing in my life. Launching the Sales Hacker podcast? Max Altschuler and I had one conversation and didn’t have a contract for the entirety of the time I hosted. We split ad revenue 50/50 and it was never an issue. Landing the $25M investment from Elephant Ventures? Clean term sheet with no funny stuff. We’ve been partners now for 3 years and they’ve been steadfast and supportive the whole time despite the many mistakes I’ve made as a CEO. Getting the best instructors to teach Pavilion University? Easy and simple. KD is teaching one of our top rated courses and working with him on the business side has been as delightful as working with him on the educational side. Getting Andrea Kayal and Michael H. to lead our biggest Chapter? Easy. No red lines. Just two great people already kicking butt and hosting the world’s biggest GTM happy hours. Yes, you heard me. The WORLD! So what’s the lesson? There are two kinds of people in this world: 1. People who are short term and transactional and think the way to make money is through the right contractual structure and the right level of chiseling. 2. People who take a long term and expansive view of value creation and understand that being easy to work with is a feature of getting more opportunities to do more work together. This doesn’t mean it’s ok to get screwed or taken advantage of. This just means the big idea people understand how the world works. They find people they trust and they do big things with them. And I’m grateful to have known a few in my lifetime.
