"Dad, are we guaranteed to qualify for the quarter-finals?" Hey LinkedIn please help, I tried explaining this to my 10y son, but one scenario stumps me: If Ireland Score 4 tries but lose by 21 points, does Ireland's victory over SA matter, or is it decided on points difference and SA qualifies ahead of Ireland? PS The official rules of RWC state "If at the completion of the pool phase two or more Teams are level on Match points, then the following criteria shall be used in the following order until one of the Teams can be determined as the higher ranked: The winner of the Match in which the two tied Teams have played each other shall be the higher ranked. The Team which has the best difference between points scored for and points scored against in all its pool Matches shall be the higher ranked." PS2 yes, it fits on a professional network because it covers the mathematical principle of being almost MECA (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) and the business communication lesson.

I'm sure it's been answered somewhere and it's a moot point now, but in answer to your question: If 3 teams finish with the same number of points, the first place is decided by points difference, and second and third place are decided on the head-to-head ruling. So, if SA, Ireland, and Scotland had all finished on 15 points, SA would've finished top, based on our points differential, Scotland's and Ireland's placement would then have been decided based on their head-to-head, and in this hypothetical Scotland won, so they would have placed second.

So - short of a mathematical miracle (and some crazy skills), Scotland are going home

Yes, always good to knock out a good MECE argument on Linkedin Ernest. This guy explained it nicely for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys1IK-5zbo4&t=305s

One thing to add to SA not going through. Scotland will have to win by >21 points, while Ireland must score 4 tries for the bonus point. That means that Scotland must beat Ireland by 42-20, with Ireland points all coming from unconverted tries, and nothing else. I know enough about rugby and stats to bet serious money against that happening.
