Apple wants to erase ads in Safari Preventing publishers from monetizing through advertising by obstructing ads from being exposed would constitute a judgment call that, in my view, Apple can't be entrusted with. Further, if such a product is rolled out, not applying it to the App Store, where Apple runs its Apple Search Ads advertising product, would present a profound inconsistency in policy.

There is certainly a history of "privacy" advocates self dealing -- "don't worry, the infrastructure we're building to serve you ads is actually in your interest! It's the other guys who are bad..." I think allowing OS and device providers to interfere with content that they're rendering is no different than bandwidth providers doing it, but it doesn't seem net neutrality legislation has caught up with this (i wonder why...not). This actually sent me down a wikipedia rabbit hole including learning about device neutrality, interesting to see the technical definitions we already have for lots of these concepts - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_neutrality

Yes, as a "gatekeeper" company in Europe Apple would be required to put similar functionality in their own App Store (where imho it is more needed—a lot of the App Store ads are misleading lookalikes of the app you were really looking for, so makes sense to block ads there even if you don't on normal sites) Ad blocker policy is also an issue at Google—the ad blocking functionality and update rules in Google Chrome are being tweaked to make ad blocking practical on non-Google sites but not YouTube https://www.404media.co/as-youtube-declares-war-on-ad-blockers-google-sponsors-ad-blocking-conference/

Apple was already doing this with Safari Reader. They'll likely boost the functionality even more through AI algorithms, to read sites "distraction-free" in both reader mode and the (new) webpage mode. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iphdc30e3b86/ios

Related to the other threads on nonlogin web (Ari Paparo) the user-hostile approaches to ads on the web make me definitely curious about features like web eraser. (Check out Apple Insider with image plus video ad.) You could argue that Reader mode does some of what’s being speculated.

Not really, they have an unchallenged monopoly in both arenas and can do what they like in the absence of effective regulation.

This one might have crossed the line. I can't imagine this not causing some type of anti trust issues primarily because of the conflict you point out.
